ST. PAUL, Minn.Minnesota's health insurance exchange is seeking a $55 million federal grant to pay for its operations next year. The board of directors of MNsure met Wednesday to review the grant request.
Five previous federal grants to Minnesota's exchange added up to $110 million. The $55 million request would cover salaries for about 166 full-time employees who would work on MNsure operations, and would also cover spending on technology, marketing, customer service, administration and other items.
The director of MNsure says that by 2015, the exchange is expected to be able to cover its own operating costs through a premium tax of up to 3.5 percent on insurance plans sold on the exchange.
The state must submit its grant application next week with an expected award date of Oct. 1. That's the same day that MNsure is supposed to start operating.

Harry: We need more money for the healthcare bill.
I thought the idea of Obamacare was to lower healthcare cost so that everyone (read poor, unemployed, young and don’t want to spend the money) would have insurance.
This State is going to sell insurance and ADD a 3.5 percent surcharge to cover their salaries and operating cost.
So basically Obamacare grows Government and does not lower the cost of healthcare.
Woe to us, cruel fate! If only we'd known!
Oh, wait...
We have to pass it to find out whats in it!!!!
...because at this point Obama will do absolutely ANYTHING to try and keep his health care law from crashing and burning.
Hey, Michigan.....go ahead and agree to build the exchange, then say you’re stuck and need a $2 trillion grant, use the money to bail out Detroit.
My brother works for Blue Cross/Blue Sheild in MN and has been tasked with trying to figure out how to implement Obamacare.
His opinion:
October of this year...no way
October of 2014...no way
October of 2015...not likely
October of 2016...maybe
My formerly apolitical brother is now hoping for a GOP landslide so that this thing can be repealed.
Don't they mean a $55 million TAXPAYER grant?
I’m traveling today in the middle of no where (Tonapah, Nevada). There is a solar panal farm being built here that is financed by a $600, 000,000 federal “loan”. Tell me the government doesn’t waste money. $55 million...that’s nothing to these hobo congresswastes.
Aren’t the new, higher cig taxes going to pay for Ziggy the fraudster’s stadium?
