so the folk what? A PhD is a doctorate, she still had to do a dissertation. Frankly I think anyone who is not a medical doctor ought not refer to themselves as a doctor even if they have a doctorate in “science”—you didn’t say science of what, earth science, Scientology?

I don’t mind that someone with aPhD wants to be called “Doctor” - it is a title they earned, but I do feel misled that she is not a medical doctor.
I keep telling my children that when I grow up I am going to get PhD in Physics and I am going to make them call me DOCTOR daddy.

Excluding the medical profession, but outside of a campus , the only place I’ve seen folks cling to the title “doctor” due to the awarding of a academic doctorate are in religious ministry and in politics. “Reverends” who should be satisfied with that stilted title if they’re into titles, also love to be “Dr.” And the really weird ones like “Reverend Doctor”. Bleagghhh.
