I simply presumed that since the Brady campaign gave grudging approval to the PA's gun laws (2 stars, 10th highest ranking for gun control)

I have NO idea what that's about.

Curious if they gave PA “good” rankings because Ed Rendell was Governor? There must be a political reason that happened, because on most metrics PA is on par with TX, and on some we exceed them when it comes to gun rights.

I dug a little deeper into the Brady rankings, and here's what I found:

http://bradycampaign.org/sites/default/files/2011%20Final%20state%20scoresA3-2%20Sheet1.pdf

Gun dealer regulations: State license required (2 pts), Record keeping and retention (2 pts), Report records to the state, and state retains records (2 pts), At least 1 store security precaution required (2 pts).

Background checks on all gun sales: Handguns only (10 pts).

Child safety locks: External locks sold with all handguns (3 pts).

No Guns in Workplace (2 pts).

No Guns on College Campuses (2 pts).

No State Preemption (partial, 1 pt).

Add it all up and they're ranked #10, largely because they give such weight to state background checks on handguns.
