Actually, it was not described in any contemporaneous newspaper accounts, nor in the recollections of Wendell Smith, the famous black baseball writer, whose beat in 1947 was Jackie Robinson. The story seems to be an embellishment on the incident in Boston, but not one promoted by Reese, personally. No newspaper accounts of the Dodgers first game in Cincinnati that season mention the incident. At the time Robinson was the first baseman, and Reese the shortstop, they would have played on opposite sides of the field. In 1948, Robinson had moved to second and would have been in the next fielding position to shortstop.

It’s a nice story, but maybe just a little too good to check.

Actually there was a “colored” league in which blacks played professionally. Jackie Robinson was the first black player to play in a major league team, though. Also a staunch Republican and an entrepreneur.

I sure hope they find the black liberal hoaxer who did this (90% chance it was IMO)

Was Jackie Robinson a Republican? I can see some white liberal in New York getting unhinged at that.

Very well aware of all that. Actually saw Robinson play in person in his last couple of years in baseball. Unfortunately, he had gotten chubby by then, which undoubtedly contributed to the diabetes he eventually died from at a young age.

Yes, Robinson was a Republican, but a Rockefeller liberal Republican. He and NY Gov. Nelson Rockefeller were pretty close pals.

http://espn.go.com/blog/playbook/fandom/post/_/id/20917/did-reese-really-embrace-robinson-in-47

Excerpt:

So the fact that no newspaper of any kind mentioned the Reese/Robinson moment in Cincinnati in May 1947 is not necessarily proof that it did not take place. However, it certainly is not proof that it did, either.

What we do know is that two different people are on the record as saying they saw the incident occur. One was Lester Rodney, a reporter for the Communist newspaper the Daily Worker, which likely provided the best coverage among the non-African-American newspapers in Robinson’s first season.

Another was Rex Barney, a Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher who recalled the story nearly 40 years later in Peter Golenbock’s excellent oral history of the Brooklyn Dodgers, “Bums.”

===== snip ========

Perhaps most noteworthy, Robinson gave a magazine interview in 1952 in which he described the event as occurring in Boston in 1948. Robinson later repeated the same story in his 1960 book, “Wait Till Next Year: The Life Story of Jackie Robinson.”

whoever did this is stupid enough to think that by drawing the logo of the National Socialist German Workers Party will turn the focus on white people. The vandal is probably a victim of public education.

Yeah, according to the story, this was a “bias crime.”

A BIAS CRIME? For God’s Sake! What’s next? Rolling your eyes crime? Looking at them perplexedly crime? Not agreeing with a commie rat bastard crime? Curling one’s lip crime?

Dry up and blow away, you thought-crime mongers.

Native born American - Christian and Caucasian - was a HUGE Mets fan when I was a kid.

We used to get WOR on our cable; I think the appeal of the National League intrigued me.

I was at game 4 of the 1986 WS in Boston with my Mets regalia on. I still have my ‘86 Mets Championship banner someplace; still have my Darryl Strawberry autographed ticket stub somewhere too.

I WAS in Brooklyn for game 6 when Schiradi-Stanley had their meltdown.

BTW, I pray that you will start to see that you are a leader in the ‘16 movement in NH and Maine. We need somebody to show up for small meetings and give the pep talk. Next time I am near Lowell, we should meet for coffee.

the fieldmarshal can help train you.

Maybe we should go to a Spinners game.

I barely remember hearing much about the Mets when I was younger (I was a teenager in 1986, and didn’t pay much attention to baseball anymore); the only time I’d been to Shea Stadium was to see a Jets game. When I was younger it was all Yankees.

I was also a teenager in 1986, thrilled that the Mets won.

Was Shea Stadium nice or dumpy? I never did make it there for a game.

“‘16 movement”: Since there is basically no opposition party in this country anymore (what’s the GOP?) and the tipping point of takers vs. producers has been reached, prepare for POTUS Hillary!.

“the fieldmarshal can help train you.” I’ve pretty much had the worst year possible so far. Unless DJ has magic pixie dust, which he doesn’t, no training will help out. I’m done with politics (see above).

Lowell: Have to break out the fully-automatics for a voyage there.

IfI recall correctly, the stadium itself was fine; the problem was the people (Jets fans). On our way in, security guards were fruitlessly chasing a group of kids that had scaled a tractor trailer cab to climb over a wall to get in. Towards the end of the game (naturally the Jets lost), somebody threw a small cylindrical cooler onto the field from way up in the stands, nearly hitting a security guard.

When they came to Giants Stadium for years the Jets weren’t allowed to host the Monday night football game because of their white trash fans’ antics.

I think this was also in place for the bad old days of the Patriots. I went to Sullivan Stadium once for a game, boy did that stadium SUCK.

“...somebody threw a small cylindrical cooler onto the field from way up in the stands, nearly hitting a security guard.”

A precursor to soccer hooligans, perhaps? Personally, I couldn’t care if I ever go to a live professional sporting event again. The hassle, from getting there, being searched, potentially dealing with sh*theads/security threats and the price make watching from a house (or a decent bar/lounge) all the more desirable.

That’s true; the only sport I really enjoyed watching live was hockey, and that was back in the day when ticket prices were geared towards families. Now they cost a lot more, and I’d have to go into Newark to see them (never going to happen - I’ve already turned down several offers of free tickets). I’ve been to one Giants game in their new stadium, and that was as a favor for a friend; the new stadium sucks.

No Newark - gotcha! Between your warnings and what I saw and smelled driving on I-95, that’s a destination I’ll never go to.

In general, sports events are way to overhyped in addition to the other negatives we’ve written about. Too much.

Plus, my interests have changed; I’m not supporting “celebrity athletes” who promote and support politicians that I find repugnant (NBA, NFL - contraband supporting Obama). I’ll watch hockey and casually watch MLB. The other two “major” sports - done.
