With a record 101 million Americans receiving food aid from the federal government, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) wants more kids to be on the dole for food during the summer months.
As part of its ongoing commitment to improving access to healthy food for low income children, USDA has set a goal of serving 5 million more meals to eligible children this summer, the agency said on Aug. 1.
The agencys goal amounts to serving 166 million meals through its Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), which already gives subsidies to 3.5 million children a day during breaks from school. The SFSP enriches the lives of millions of low-income children in communities across the U.S., the USDA said. However, it reaches far fewer children than the school programs. Last year, the agency provided 161 million meals, bringing the goal to 166 million government-subsidized meals served.
Kids with EBT cards
One of the ways the government will achieve this aim is by giving children subsidies on EBT cards. The USDA released an evaluation report on testing new methods to provide food to children in the summer, specifically through the Summer Electronic Benefits Transfer for Children (SEBTC) program....

Broward co florida is giving free breakfast regardless of income this year. a and you can get a ride, free bf and lunch during summer.
So they can claim the Republicans are STARVING EVEN MORE CHILDREN when they propose a 0.5% budget cut.
Then turn off the EBT cards for every household enrolled it this program.
Where do I sign up for such a sweet deal? Oh, yeah, I’m just a Christian conservative disabled veteran, I don’t rate anything like that. I’m sure all the people getting that free stuff have contributed much more than you and I towards this nation and society, right?
Here’s my idea of a subsidy. Let the child go ahead and buy his own meat or peanut butter, and I’ll kick in 2 slices of bread so he can have a sandwich. I have a feeling that this subsidy isn’t even limited to actual food. Seems like the definition of “subsidy” should require that the recipient have some skin in the game, but maybe that is just me, the hard-working, tax-paying bitter clinger.
If we are going to feed the children so many times, we could probably cut the EBT card benefits way back since the kids are getting free food from all these other sources.
and to do everything they can to cut down on 166 million working job hours.
is the program really needed - the kids are not getting fed at home??
I am thinking of the many benefits existing for those living below the poverty line. I saw a calculation the other day and it seems they are all doing very well and no one should be hungry. Some of those who also receive unemployment benefits, especially Massachusetts, make more than I do with my retirement income.
Never worked for the government, have you?
This is great, because now the kids can get early experience swapping EBT bucks for useful things like dope, booze, and ammo. They don’t have to wait for 18.
The King will reply, Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”
Well it looks like, since they cannot get free food at school in the summer, “we” are paying for them to get an extra $60 per kid per month in the summer, so their parents don’t have to stretch their EBT benefits to also buy food for their children.
(THIS WHOLE DEAL JUST MAKES ME LIVID, AND IT IS IS TAKING EVERYTHING I HAVE TO NOT GO OFF ON SOME RANT....)
To paraphrase, “There’s no such thing as a free breakfast.”
How about if the gummint start charging for meals? Make it highly affordable, but make them pay SOMETHING. Have them get used to paying for what they get.
Our children: 3 Marines veterans, 2 nurses, and a college grad working in family business. They are all working for the government as well, to pay the taxes to support this. Even the disabled vet Marine.
I wonder how this is supposed to work? Do the kids take their card and eat at McDonald’s or what? If so how does this work with Michelle’s healthy food for children campaign? If they aren’t allowed prepared food not sure how they are supposed to use it. Their mom is already getting the food card that has breakfast costs included, so should be food in home for them already.
This whole thing is just completely out of control. Food cards are figured by size of family for all meals, then mostly the same kids get free breakfast and lunch at school during school- and meals during summer from another program. We are feeding the same children multiple meals as I see it. I said years ago if families were on food stamps they should not get “free” or “reduced” lunches at school, they should have to use the food they bought with food stamps to pack their children a lunch.
If you question anyone involved or most liberals they say “some parents trade the food cards for cash, drugs, money so we just want to insure the children are eating so it doesn’t matter if the programs overlap” I have been complaining about all this for years but most don’t care. “It’s FREE” they say, well it sure isn’t free since the taxpayer is paying for all of it, including the salaries of all those employed in the “free food” scam.
I came to the same conclusion when I helped a friend get off the streets. Monthly check was more than mine.
Someone please tell me why EBT cards can be used at restaurants this taxpayer can’t afford to go to.
They do that here, “free” breakfast for all at school, free and reduced lunches or most, and they serve “free” food at parks in the summer. If you take your children to the park you will see about 4 kids actually eating their “free” food and the people serving it will harass- yes harass any other children they see to try to get them to eat the “free” food. I had one of them chase down my kids years ago when this started here and offer food to them. My children and I politely declined their offer and they became insistent that my children should eat the “free” food even after I told them my children had just been fed at a restaurant and were not hungry. The people doing the program then wanted to just claim my children ate the “free” food- ask them questions and check them off on a paper; and I ripped them apart over their “free” food and told them it sure wasn’t free to the taxpayers. Schools do this scam with their breakfast too, trying to harass children that don’t even eat the breakfast into scanning their ID so the school can claim they fed them and get the $$$. I had a fight with our little country school about doing that years ago- to me it is fraud pure and simple.
