Self-publishing has it’s place, but if someone wants to really do a great job it would be good to hire an editor.
I do “enjoy” some of my free books and the editing, or lack thereof. Get correction updates from time to time. Still, people are getting recognition.

How do unknown authors prevent an editor stealing their idea?
