I am an 84-year-old angry Black man. I am Mississippi born, Mississippi bred and Mississippi fled. I am the son of former slaves. My parents and I rode in the back of the bus. We rode in the front of the trains. We drank from water fountains designated for coloreds only. We picked cotton in fields owned by White people.
My parents attended separate but equal schools in Mississippi. I attended separate but equal schools in Mississippi and in Oakland, California. My wife was educated in Oakland public schools and at the University of California at Berkeley. She could not get a job teaching in Oakland Public schools in Oakland in 1954. I hold an undergraduate and a graduate degree from the University of California at Berkeley. I was profiled at a Washington, D.C., hotel in 2010, forced to sleep in a homeless shelter overnight.
I saw nothing in the Zimmerman case that surprised me. The system worked as it was intended. Zimmerman, a White man, was tried by a White justice system for killing a Black boy. The outcome was predictable. Many White people saw this as a non-racial event.
The O.J. Simpson jury found for the defense. The jury found reasonable doubt. The George Zimmerman jury found for the defense. The six White women on the jury found reasonable doubt. Zimmerman admitted that he killed Trayvon Martin. Simpson denied that he killed anyone. The press excoriated the Simpson jury. The Zimmerman jury was praised.
In both cases, the state presented weak cases. There are lessons to be learned from both cases. Laws are made to control the actions of people who cant afford to break them. Both Simpson and Zimmerman bought as much justice as they needed. Their jurors were presented with reasonable doubt.
In the Zimmerman case, there are some facts that concerned citizens should understand. George Zimmerman is White. The juror of unknown ethnicity is White. The police who refused to arrest Zimmerman and who testified for him were White. The judge, and the prosecution were White. Every critical function carried on in that justice system was performed by a White person. Such is the case in almost every trial or plea bargaining case involving a Black man in this country.
George has been described as Hispanic. That does not mean that he is not White. The term Hispanic is a political designation that describes national origin, not race. Hispanic is a protected designation under our civil rights laws, but the term is not racial. I would guess that George Zimmerman, on his drivers license under race, is designated White.
The most important fact to know is that the prosecution worked as hard for George Zimmerman as they did for the state of Florida. The prosecution did not challenge the lack of Afro Americans on the jury. The prosecution did not present its own theory of the case; it reacted to Zimmermans story of the case.
The prosecutions case should have been presented on the theory that the wounds displayed by Zimmerman were self-inflicted. Zimmerman inflicted those wounds on himself. Zimmerman knew enough about the law to know he needed such wounds. Such a prosecution theory would have forced the defense to defend against this theory, and it might have caused Zimmerman to testify.
Instead, the prosecution introduced a tape made by the Zimmerman defense. The prosecution should have fought to keep that tape out of the trial. In a just world this prosecutor would be disbarred for malpractice.
The second worst flaw in the prosecutions case was their failure to challenge Zimmermans voice recognition by his friends and relatives. The prosecution needed to recode several voices saying what Zimmerman was alleged to have yelled on the 911 tapes, replay them and ask each of the witnesses to identify the Zimmerman voice.
The third flaw by the prosecution was to bring in a skinny dummy. They should have brought in a live person of the same height and weight as Zimmerman and required that person to pull his gun with Trayvon on top of him. The prosecution should have punctured a heart with Trayvon on top to test blood spatter. If Zimmerman had a broken nose, who repaired it?
Finally, if Trayvon was on top of Zimmerman when he was shot in the heart, why was there no blood of Martins on Zimmermans clothes? Why was this question not asked at trial?
The justice system worked as it is designed to do. The system exonerated a White man who admitted killing a Black boy. The Justice Department will not bring an action in this case. Just because the man who heads it is Black does not mean he runs it. DOJ is a system that runs the same no matter who is at the top.
Racism is structured into most of the important systems in this country.
1.Communications 99% of the TV, radio and print media properties are owned by White people.
2.Construction 99% of the construction in this country is done by White people.
3.Education 99% of all educational resources are allocated by White people.
4.Transportation 99% of all transportation is controlled by White people.
5.Justice this system is 99.9% controlled by White people.
6.Financial this system is 99.9 % controlled by white people.
When Congresswomen Maxine Waters asked that 0.000001 percent of the $700 billion bailout money go to banks owned or controlled by descendants of former slaves, they tried to put her in jail.
If we think that we get fair treatment in any of these systems, we must re-examine our definition of fairness.
As an angry old Black man I have seen the diminution of racism in my lifetime. We are not there yet. It is unlikely that we will get there in the lifetime of my grandchildren.

It’s faintly possible his father could have been a former slave, but he claims to be the son of former “slaves”, plural.
The odds of a 66+ year old black woman giving birth is essentially zero.
84 years old and has been whining and crying for 84 years because he was born black
It is the common glue that holds blacks together, those tears because they were born black. They all cry them incessantly.
“We picked cotton in fields owned by White people. “
So? Blacks own farms, too.
If he hates white people so much he is free to go live in Africa someplace and fight for his very life every few years during the next civil war. There isn’t a black nation on Earth that racist bigot would ever live.
His parents were slaves? Really?
2013-1865=148 years
148-84=64 years
So his parents were 64 years old when he was born, presuming that they were only slaves as infants.
And he was “profiled” at a hotel in the countries most liberal city, at the age of 82! What was he profiled for, not paying his bill?
Some racists grow out of it, others just get old.
Pathetic.
I think people underestimate how many grumpy old black voters there are. They assume it is only the young black hipsters who are helping Obama get the black turnout. A lot of old blacks with poor education as well.
Obama won largely because of large turnout amongst older blacks.
He claims Zimmerman’s wounds were self-inflicted.
Give me a break!!
Let me make it clear right up front: I am NOT a racist. I supported Herman Cain in his run for the Senate and supported him in his run for the WH. And if Allen West goes for it, he, too, has my support.
I also consider Thomas Sowell and Walter Williams two of the finest economists and minds extant today. In case you dont know them, both are black.
Sowell, Williams and Cain among others — have spoken out against those fellow blacks who castigate and vilify America for a slave system now long in our past. And ALL thinking men and women oppose the periodic calls for reparations. (When he ran, I supported Alan Keyes. I even spoke in his stead on the RTKABA at a Capitol rally and was asked to fill in for him on his radio show at the time. Sadly, while I still consider Alan a good man, I have had to rethink my support since he came out FOR reparations.)
The fact is that the modern descendants of slaves brought here in chains in admittedly miserable, soul-gutting conditions now calling for reparations need to remember something:
They should not only be glad to be in America, they should be glad to be ANYWHERE!
Had their ancestors NOT been brought OUT of Africa many by Muslim slave raiders —the blood of those ancestors would have run into the earth over there several centuries ago, victims of the OTHER black tribes that captured them in one of the interminable tribal conflicts STILL ravaging that sad continent and these modern day would-be “plaintiffs” would not even exist.
And I would remind you that slavery is STILL practiced in parts of Africa (mainly by American BLACK muslims LISTEN UP!! — MUSLIMS) and Asia today. How ironic that disgruntled American blacks are embracing a system that participated mightily in their initial bondage and would, if Islam takes root here, probably put any who cling to their Christianity back INTO BONDAGE or to the sword. In fact, as the majority of muslims consider black folks as sub-human, many of you black muzzies will get the axe.
95% of the African slaves who were transported across the Atlantic went to South and Central America, mainly to Portuguese, Spanish and French possessions, and that less than 5% of the slaves who crossed the Atlantic went to the United States, it was remarkable that the vast majority of academic research, films, books and articles concerning the slave trade concentrated only on the American involvement, as though slavery was a uniquely American aberration.
And should the great-great-great grandchildren of SLAVE OWNING BLACKS also be subject to PAYING these reparations? If so, how do we find THEM?
And I have traced MY family back to the SLAVS. Although the term looks to be related to slave, depending on your source, it either means glory or worshipper. But my family research indicates that many of my of my ancestors LIVED lives of virtual slavery to some despot or other. Do I qualify for reparations? From whom?? And it begs a question: Are most of us now living here headed into a modern form of that servitude? But thats a topic for another discussion.
The official US Census of 1830 lists 3,775 free blacks who owned 12,740 black slaves. Furthermore, the story outlines the history of slavery here, and the first slave owner, the Father of American slavery, was Mr. Anthony Johnson, of Northampton, Virginia. His slave was John Casor, the first slave for life. Both were black Africans. The story is very readable, and outlines cases of free black women owning their husbands, free black parents selling their children into slavery to white owners, and absentee free black slave owners, who leased their slaves to plantation owners.

Of course, a full telling of Black History would not be complete without a recitation of the origin of slavery in the Virginia colony:
Virginia, Guide to The Old Dominion, WPA Writers’ Program, Oxford University Press, NY, 1940, p. 378
A few more salient points on the subject:
Until the US declared independence, the Colonies were REQUIRED by the King of England to embrace slavery.
The Northwest Ordinance (1789) prohibited slavery in federal territories.
A law prohibiting the importation of slaves into the US became effective in 1808.
Beginning in 1820, the Democratic Congress started passing laws allowing and encouraging slavery.
It was only after the Republican Party (many of whom were southern Blacks) was formed some 40 years later that the anti-slavery movement was able to move forward.
And the holier-than-thou Northern liberals are strangely silent on recent archeological evidence from NEW YORK CITY clearly tracing the financing of the slave trade to NORTHERN BUSINESSMEN!!
At the height of his remarkable boxing career, Muhammad Ali (born Cassius Clay), once declared, Im glad my great-grandpa got on that boat.
And speaking of ancestors, my paternal grandmothers daddy joined with the 80th Ohio Volunteer Infantry early in the War Between the States (re-upped twice) and fought on the Union side at Chickamauga, Vicksburg, Jackson then joined up with Sherman for that infamous march to the sea through Georgia. My wifes great grandpappy ALSO fought for the Union. While I revere the memory of my ancestors, inasmuch as that conflict was less about slavery than it was the economic exploitation and abuse of the South by the North, I fear they MAY have been on the wrong side.
Author Robert Hitt Neill tells of attending a Tennessee Mountain Writers Conference years ago with several other authors. Among them was Alex Hailey, celebrated author of Roots. Watching a TV news show, a group of them watched a demonstration in a Southern state against the Rebel flag incorporated into that states flag. The very next report covered a famine in Africa. Graphic images showed dead bodies, starving children with distended tummies and runny noses and dying people covered with flies, too weak to brush them away.
Mr. Hailey intoned in a low, serious voice, Every time an American black sees a story like that, they should find a Confederate flag and kiss it. He then pointed to the TV screen and continued, Because these would be me and my descendants, except for American slavery. I thank God that my family and I are here instead of there.
Next problem!

Thank you for an intelligent post. Locally we had one of the largest slave holding families in Virgina. The Jones family was a wealthy black family whose main product was breeding an selling slaves. When the local mullet wrapper paper printed the historical story a few years back, I thought the local NAACP was going to burn down their building.
I found a truthful sentence.
All that hate’s gonna eat that boy all out some day. He’s been at it a long time.
This guy is old enough to know better than to call St. Tray "boy".
Gee, this is news. **YAWN** Are there any black men who AREN’T “angry”?
And the bit about being forced to sleep in a homeless shelter because some DC hotel “profiled” him in 2010 - -yeah, can’t wait to hear that BS story.
Mostly because the Blacks over there won’t allow them. Despite what the media tells the African-Americans here and what the African Americans here tell themselves, the people in Africa do not appreciate or want there presence there.
At the third sentence, my BS detector went off the scale. Are the readers of this newspaper so illiterate that they accept his claim at face value?
The author may well be the son of former slaves, but they weren’t slaves in the United States of America—they were slaves in one of the African hellholes where slavery is practiced to this day.
??? Only if she was born in in 1865.
He’s not an angry black man. He’s just plain crazy.
This clown is wackier than John McCain. Or, this could be the work of some sicko college kid’s compilation of family stories he’s heard over his 17 years of life. This is how a lot of white people become the grandkids of Cherokee princesses.
