As soon as Monica blew up, Clinton was bombing Sudan.

So..I don’t see why this president would be any different.

Both! There are entire communities in Afghanistan and Pakistan that are gay.

Consider this...take a religion and force it on a society that demands that all girls are sold to rich old men and then hidden from public view. And then promise all the boys that if they martyr themselves for Allah...they will get a harem of virgins in the afterlife.

These are preteen and teenage Islamic boys (i.e. raging hormones)...there are only goats and other young men left.

What do you think is going to happen?

If only Obama would say something conciliatory to his Muslim brethren to, you know, calm things down.

Ya know....it’s occured to me that all this al queda/embassy hysteria may be no more than a WH/NSA diversion from all the “phony scandals.”

Distract the public while boosting NSA cred at the same time.

Like maybe:

“We’re not sure exactly what is motivating this most recent threat as we’ve tried at every turn to emasculate ourselves to appease you, but we can say that it appears that the infidels acted stupidly...”

Barack Obama. You know its bad when he makes conservatives pine for the good ole days of Jimmy Carter.

I think the embassies are being shut down for a completely
different reason entirely. This administration lies all the
time. Why wouldn’t they lie now? They’re probably shredding
evidence and they don’t want anyone to see it.

How would you like to be a U.S. embassy employee in the Middle East returning to work on August 11th?

EIGHT ELEVEN has a nice ring to it, doesn't it?

Ahhhhhhh, Jimmy Carter. What’s he doing these days?
Oh, that’s right, he’s in North Korea trying to ensure their next elections are fair and impartial. Hope he is successful and they keep him there.

God save America.

I understand where you are coming from, and partially agree. However, from my admittedly limited experience as a citizen “customer” of one of our embassies in a 3rd world country where there are hostile Muslim elements, there is unfortunately no way to “quietly” do as you suggest, especially in a period measured in months or less. “Local” intelligence of the enemy would have it figured out before we got 1/4 of the measures in place.

What we should have been doing for the last several (20+?) years is special forces training any personnel sent to “at risk” embassies, and gradually building up defenses, such that any such embassy could hold off for at least several hours any attack short of a battalion from a modern army. There are many creative and highly lethal options. This does not mean the embassy is not overrun, but much can be done, and as a last resort, it means real and defensible safe rooms, not the rinky-dink excuse for such we had @ Benghazi. Then we make sure we have MOBILE rapid response units in the theater, and means to quickly move them, and UAV’s or other aircraft to within a couple hours strike time if threats appear imminent. (This last, done correctly, the enemy in at least their present capacity, would be unable to observe in real time.)

Mutual support agreements with other nations (Britain and France, for example) would also be useful. Though that implies considerable planning and cooperation, WTH, the “Allies” bombed the daylights out of Libya without any major friendly fire incidents. If one looks at a map of the embassies currently closed, the above is NOT all that formidable a task, at least in this instance.

Host countries are told in no uncertain terms that if they cannot defend our embassy’s perimeter, we will give brief warning to them, but get the **** out of the way when they see us “incoming”.

Of course, this assumes a competent chain of command that will actually respond decisively to an attack, but, that is a separate problem.

AQ could respond with attacks in multiple locations, some heavier than others, but that would spread them thin, meaning our embassy based forces could hold out even longer, giving us more time to bring more forces to bear. In the end, AQ could be easily outmatched at every turn.

The thing that bothers me is that IF this latest threat is real, “strategically significant” would mean something beyond even multiple embassy attacks. Others have addressed this point in this thread, also. Either our response is incorrect, or someone is fearmongering. I’d love to see someone publicly discuss this point Monday. (Rush?)

Yup. That’s why he’s earned such a great birthday vacation.

Emergency Message to U.S. Citizens
U.S. Embassy, Manila, Philippines
August 5, 2013

THE EMBASSY OF THE UNITED STATES IS TRANSMITTING THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION AS A PUBLIC SERVICE TO U.S. CITIZENS IN THE PHILIPPINES. PLEASE DISSEMINATE THIS MESSAGE TO ALL U.S. CITIZENS IN YOUR ORGANIZATION OR NEIGHBORHOOD. THANK YOU.

U.S. Department of State Worldwide Travel Alert
The Department of State issued a Worldwide Travel Alert for all U.S. citizens on August 2, 2103. The full text of the Travel Alert can be viewed at the Department of State’s main web site, http://www.travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/pa/pa_6042.html.
The Travel Alert states the following:
The Department of State alerts U.S. citizens to the continued potential for terrorist attacks, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa, and possibly occurring in or emanating from the Arabian Peninsula. Current information suggests that al-Qa’ida and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks both in the region and beyond, and that they may focus efforts to conduct attacks in the period between now and the end of August. This Travel Alert expires on August 31, 2013.

Terrorists may elect to use a variety of means and weapons and target both official and private interests. U.S. citizens are reminded of the potential for terrorists to attack public transportation systems and other tourist infrastructure. Terrorists have targeted and attacked subway and rail systems, as well as aviation and maritime services. U.S. citizens should take every precaution to be aware of their surroundings and to adopt appropriate safety measures to protect themselves when traveling.
We continue to work closely with other nations on the threat from international terrorism, including from al-Qa’ida. Information is routinely shared between the U.S. and our key partners in order to disrupt terrorist plotting, identify and take action against potential operatives, and strengthen our defenses against potential threats.

The Embassy wishes to remind all U.S. citizens to remain vigilant and maintain an appropriate level of personal security in all circumstances by reviewing your personal safety plans; remaining aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitoring local news sources for updates.

Ideally we should close the embassies of all countries who hate us and cut any and all moneies sent there, it is a fiscally sound policy.
