Professor says kids no longer need to learn spelling and grammar because of smartphones
The Daily Caller 4 hours ago Education
Several skills that every kid once learned in school are going the way of the dodo in a hurry. Diagramming sentences is practically an extinct art, for example. Cursive handwriting and memorized multiplication tables look to be swiftly headed that way.
Apparently, the next thing that kids will no longer need to learn is spelling and grammar.
Sugata Mitra, a professor of educational technology at Newcastle University in northeast England, announced that traditional language rules are out of fashion, reports the Daily Mail. Kids dont need to waste time on those things, see. State-of-the-art computers and mobile phones can make the necessary corrections.
Spelling and grammar are a bit unnecessary because they are skills that were very essential maybe 100 years ago but they are not right now, Mitra said. Firstly, my phone corrects my spelling so I dont really need to think about it and, secondly, because I often skip grammar and write in a cryptic way.
The professor made the anti-spelling proclamation at a time when the British government is rolling out a host of educational standards including one that will require students to take a spelling test involving 200 complex words near the end of grade school.
Another exam for 11-year-olds that tests spelling, grammar and punctuation was launched this year.

"Professor says kids no longer need to learn spelling and grammar because of smartphones"
Another sci-fi movie becoming reality. I’ve seen sci-fi movies set in the future where nobody knows how to read or write or do even the simplest math because computers do it for them.
Deer Professir: your defiantly a liberal if you think theirs know place for speling and grammer. Their are to many words that sound a like butt are spelt diferently.
Your spelling and grammar were just fine in that post (although it's proper to capitalize the pronoun "I"), so I can pay attention.
It's hard to wade thru the crap that some folks post. I've always said that if you don't care enough to write it correctly, then why should I care enough to read it?
What are you doing with my phone? Did I leave it somewhere?
Newspeak:
Vastly streamlining and truncating language and other means of expression is a government ploy implemented throughout the educational system and the media in order to stifle independent thought, and thus control the masses.
I refuse to accept or send text messages. Anybody who wishes to discuss something with me can CALL me.
Or, if that is too difficult, they can write a letter, with a pen, on paper, in cursive.
The post office still delivers.
Oh yes, and tuition will go up so that dumba$$e$ like this can continue to dummify our kids.
And to the NSA trolls, FU.
I’ve wondered about diagramming sentences. I haven’t diagrammed one since fourth grade (1964 or so), so why did I learn it?
Maybe it taught me the parts of speech. Knowing the diagramming is not important, knowing the parts of speech is.
Hard to say.
Good for you!! Wish I saw this attitude more often these days instead of the following mentality: “I have ADHD/ADD/Dyslexia/Dysgraphia, etc... so I shouldn’t have to _____________” (Put “spell”, “write correctly” or anything else you want to put in the blank.)
like Ideocracy
There, they’re, their, petal, metal, meddle, stuff like that. Things I learned to differentiate between when I was... what, 9, 10 years old?
Nazi Ball Soup...HAH!
And he’s Jewish...
No Nazi Ball Soup For YOU!
Changing spellings doth make no sense. What hath the author wrought?
“Brave New World”
I recall hearing the same sort of nonsense many years ago, when some education professors declared that due to the pervasiveness of calculators, children no longer needed to learn basic math.
What these morons miss is that these disciplines give a young student tools to use in more advanced studies as an older student or even in life.
Is it any wonder that schools of education usually have the lowest admission standards?
Mark
I’m a huge fan of diagramming sentences because if you can diagram them you know your parts of speech. Of course, once the Education Depts. in colleges and universities began to posture themselves in the role of “preparing teachers of the future”, and anyone wanting to teach had to go through their programs —those tried and true methods went out the window. I’ll never forget hitting 9th grade and being told by my English teacher (when I asked her how a specific sentence would look in a diagram) that she had no idea how to diagram.....It was surreal.

Someone should write a science fiction story about Rachel Jeantel being transported to the distant future....
I was actually Thinking about “1984”, but yes, this fits the “Brave new World” paradigm as well.
Both Books were excellent.
