Professor says kids no longer need to learn spelling and grammar because of smartphones
The Daily Caller 4 hours ago Education
Several skills that every kid once learned in school are going the way of the dodo in a hurry. Diagramming sentences is practically an extinct art, for example. Cursive handwriting and memorized multiplication tables look to be swiftly headed that way.
Apparently, the next thing that kids will no longer need to learn is spelling and grammar.
Sugata Mitra, a professor of educational technology at Newcastle University in northeast England, announced that traditional language rules are out of fashion, reports the Daily Mail. Kids dont need to waste time on those things, see. State-of-the-art computers and mobile phones can make the necessary corrections.
Spelling and grammar are a bit unnecessary because they are skills that were very essential maybe 100 years ago but they are not right now, Mitra said. Firstly, my phone corrects my spelling so I dont really need to think about it and, secondly, because I often skip grammar and write in a cryptic way.
The professor made the anti-spelling proclamation at a time when the British government is rolling out a host of educational standards including one that will require students to take a spelling test involving 200 complex words near the end of grade school.
Another exam for 11-year-olds that tests spelling, grammar and punctuation was launched this year.

reach=read (Yeah, I didn’t read what I wrote!)
That could be series, I’ll check my beeber..........
Guess I’d fail. Supposedly I’m a part of this generation, however a late comer, and I don’t know any of this shorthand garbage.
Depending on what she looks, like...credit where it's due, perhaps?
For that matter, kids don’t “need” to learn anything. Now we can close all public schools and save billions of tax payer dollars. They don’t learn anything useful there anyways.
SMART phones DUMB kids

Dummy Professor on Parade.
I remember 1960's The Time Machine with Rod Taylor. When he went way into the future, the people there couldn't read the books they had - which were splintering and falling to dust from age and neglect - and they were as dumb as rocks and very compliant, something the feral government would love to see happen.
Is this where we are headed? My wife and I make our kids read as much as we can, and they are good readers (my daughter even writes short stories, scripts, etc.), But what about their kids? Will there be anything left for them to read besides today's Kindle, which will probably be politically correctly re-written every chance the libs get.
I was a real crackah when I visited Europe and had a fairly smart phone there to communicate with my acquaintances there using SMS, that we call here using the ugly neologism ‘texting’ (sorry, I prefer acronyms over ugly!), and I s l o w l y typed full sentences doing it, none of the shorthand lingo.
I think you just hit the nail squarely on the head!
Let’s be honest. They no longer have to learn spelling and grammar for the same reasons they no longer have to learn or understand math. It’s too hard for the teachers to teach, most of whom don’t know anything, either. Teachers are owned by their plantationist unions who couldn’t care less about kids anywhere, or anything other than their own enrichment. And the democrat loving unions controlling the schools have only one education agenda: to turn out illiterates who know only how to vote for democrats.
As someone who struggles mightily with spelling and grammar. I think this is BS. A lot of times when i write online people don’t take my viewpoint seriously because my spelling and grammar are horrid. I want to improve it, NOT make excuses for it, that i can type like an idiot, because i have a cell phone.
But it has electrolytes!
Using this moron’s logic, why should we spend billions and billions of dollars “educating” the “churldren”. Just buy each newborn a “smart” phone and be done with it. Throw in a quick 10 minute session on putting condoms on cucumbers and the coming extinction of the polar bears and call that good. That’s their “education”. They’ll be fine until an EMP event occurs.
I don't know about the "reaching" part, but I see proof of what you say all the time.
People will write "should of" and "would of" without realizing how ignorant it makes them look. That's not a typo, that's just ignorance.
And they hear it all the time on the idiot box, but if you don't read it, you apparently don't realize they are saying "should've" and "would've".
