I don't have the words to respond to this topic.
I saw the whole disaster play out in real time on live TV when I was in Houston transiting to a new job. I was in a bar with TV's in every corner. Deep breath... my stomach is boiling and I'm ready to hurl.
For me, the Waco situation is like when JFK was smoked in Dallas. I'll always remember when the armored mechanical attack from the Feds was initiated... and then the whole compound became engulfed in flames that killed every man, woman, and child in the compound.
They were not “feds”. I was mistaken at first, too. They were Wisconsin Dept of Natural Resources agents. I withdraw my opinions in this matter simply because I respect states rights.
You are right I missed that one. This time it was my asterisk*!
Lol yes it seems to be a pandemic at this point!
I don’t really know what to say about the potential disease. I’m not for rabies being spread either, but I’m also not for killing all animals to make sure it doesn’t spread.
Disease is a fact of life in nature. I mean plague alone is scary enough to possibly make one never want to venture outside, but then you would miss out on some of the most beautiful sites and things this world has to offer.
I think the way this was handled was quite bizarre to put it mildly.
I made the same point yesterday. If these guys are so tough with their guns and flak jackets ask for an work with another department. Right now tonight a hot summer friday night...ask to patrol a place only 60 miles south. Say 76th street on the south of Chicago. A territory owned by the Gangster Disciples and man up. They wouldn’t even get out of their SUVs.
On that we can agree.
Giggles would have become an urban deer and would have feasted on neighborhood shrubbery, flowers, and fruit trees.
You don’t need any stinkin flame suit. Lots here have your back!
None have shown up tonight ... must be their day off. LOL!
What? Then the busload of Storm Troopers wouldn’t get any overtime............
You could bag two deer next hunting season, and one could be “infected”.
How would you possibly find out which butchered cuts of the infected deer meat was “bad”, before you cooked and ate it?
The correct answer is: you can’t.
But the risk is miniscule for non-domestitcated animals.
If, OTOH, one buys meat products from farms and ranches that force feed herbivores with meat by-products, the “prion disease” risk escalates, exponentially.
All it takes is one tiny tick...
Gosh. 82 posts before somebody got it right.
If the disease does not ever manifest itself in any way whatsoever, then that disease doesn't exist. Such a disease exists; so it must have symptoms. Perhaps there is no quick test that you can do to find out if the animal is infected. But it only means that the animal stays in the shelter until the answer becomes known. The only way to contract the disease is to eat the deer, and I don't think that it's very likely at the shelter.
Legally, the LEOs could have been correct, and transportation of a wild animal without proper paperwork is prohibited at least in this state (CA.) But going around and shooting Bambies is not how you should spread love. The deer did not know what hit him. It's the people who were hurt. Humans do not hunt fawns for a reason. Traditional hunting societies respect life; they only take a grown animal, and only when necessary. Humans of all societies are reluctant to hurt the young.
Ah, but I do know that deer in my area are NOT infected. So if I bag two deer locally I can fearlessly eat them both.
I’d like it to stay that way.
All I really have to worry about here is plague. Why? Because San Fransisco didn’t quarantine Chinatown and institute a rat catching program when there was a minor outbreak.
So far it’s limited to the western US, shall we send you some of our “rescued” wildlife? I’d hate to think you’re missing the fun.
Oh, and the possibly contaminated deer? Only bag deer that aren’t visibly wasting away, that aren’t wandering in fixed paths, that don’t have a vacant look, or droopy head and of the deer you do bag, don’t eat the brain, spinal column, eyes, spleen, tonsils or lymph nodes.
And remember NO amount of cooking that doesn’t destroy every protein in the meal will render the mis-folded prion proteins safe.
Bon appetit...
Life is fatal.
Eat, drink, and be merry.
All the prion diseases listed have long incubation periods, but you knew that didn’t you?
All the diseases listed have frank, overt, and horrific symptoms in their advanced stages, but you knew that too, didn’t you?
I assume you also know that Chronic Wasting Disease in deer is spread from deer to deer, I also assume you know that deer don’t customarily eat each other. They do doo-doo and deer doo do contain enough prions to contaminate feed and fields.
But by all means don’t let that stop you from advocating moving deer from contaminated areas to clean ones. California could use its own outbreak, that would certainly serve those eeeeeeevil hunters right for *sob* shooting BAMBI’S MOTHER!!!! BooHooHooHoo!!!
Eventually.
But that's no excuse for encouraging the spread of horrific diseases.
Woah, there buddy, you are making too much sense!
You miss the point.
The most important thing is for these armed and paid for by you is that they go home safely. When are you going to learn to cower?
I've lived in Wisconsin all my life and for as long as I can remember, it has been a State law that the general public can not house a wild species unless they hold a valid "Game Farm" license. I can hear all the objections already about money grubbing and so on but the real reason to regulate is to control the spread of diseases among wild animals.
For instance you find an adult raccoon under your porch and it looks sickly. Do you try to catch it in a box and maybe nurse it back to health? Chances are very good that it has rabies which is currently spreading through small to medium sized mammals in SE Wisconsin.
The Wisconsin Deer population is larger than ever before in history. There are city/suburban areas where Deer have moved right in and browse on your decorative shrubs. That is a nuisance factor, more importantly over the last five or so years a neurological disease similar to "Mad Cow" which is called "Wasting Disease" has infected portions of the herd and the DNR is attempting to contain the infection and prevent a explosive spread through the entire population.
So take the case of "Giggles", abandoned by her mother? Maybe her mother died of Wasting Disease leaving Giggles alone and infected as well. You find her and deliver her to a soft hearted soul who takes in the orphan and thereby infects every animal in her barn.
FYI Wasting Disease can spread to humans just like Mad Cow by eating tainted meet. If WD contaminates a large part of the Wisconsin deer population it will be a ecological and a monitary disaster. The annual Deer hunt brings in hundreds of millions to the State economy every fall. If the disease gets wide spread the only solution may be to slaughter the entire herd to stop its spread and it would certainly take decades to build the Deer population back up to self sustaining levels.
Lots of people who don't know the situation feel free to pontificate about the ham handed DNR. I will go out on a limb and say they are doing the best that they can to manage our wildlife population while allowing free access to the public at large.
Regards,
GtG
