FULL TITLE: "Army officer gets 20 years' jail for murder after he ordered troops to open fire on Afghan men approaching their checkpoint - but his lawyers say he was protecting platoon"
An Oklahoma Army lieutenant has been found guilty of two counts of murder in connection with a series of shootings in Afghanistan.
A jury at Fort Bragg delivered the verdict against Clint Lorance, an 82nd Airborne Division lieutenant, on Thursday evening and he was sentenced to 20 years in prison, forfeiture of all pay and dismissal from the U.S. Army. Lorance, 28, was found not guilty of making a false official statement.
Prosecutors said Lorance recklessly ordered his men to open fire immediately, after three men on a motorcycle approached his patrol in southern Afghanistan in July 2012. They said this was in violation of the military's rules of engagement, which requires soldiers to hold fire unless they have evidence of hostile action or hostile intent.
Two of the men were killed and the third ran away.

I have not made a great study of this case. However, it seems like the 1LT got 20 years for issuing an order and standing his ground in a combat environment. At the same time Obama dodged any responsibility to give orders during the Benghazi incident by hiding and probably getting drunk in his quarters.

This isn’t a ‘joking’ matter but how did they let one get away?
A friend of mine who was an Army LT in WWII was Jewish and he had been ‘accepted’ like any other ‘Butter Bar’ - a lot of apprehension etc...the men took to him though and when the ‘Boss’ went down he was thrust in the position. At one point they were pretty much ‘cut off’ and had captured a German soldier. One of the squad spoke a little German and the LT’s plan was turn him over to HQ when the chance presented itself.
They fed the POW and were going to put him under guard when a SGT Kelly came forward and finally went to the LT and sneeringly said “What should I do with him?” and was told to ‘Take care of him, we are pulling out in an hour’.
They walked off and they heard some gunfire and Kelly came back and said “Sir, I took care of him”. Oh well, nobody is perfect - and no, my friend wasn’t ‘proud’ of how that turned out but he also didn’t get suicidal.
NSA etal both parties are long gone......
And the ‘unintended effect’ of this trial is that all officers and NCO’s are now going to call JAG on whether or not they can defend their positions.

I appreciate the efforts of those men serving our country. I served myself, but I had a President in my time, and the military had real Commanders.
