Media: A Tennessee newspaper fired an editor over a hard-hitting editorial denouncing President Obama's jobs plan on the very day the president came to town to tout it. This has the odor of White House revanchism.
ngbfThe Chattanooga Times Free Press insists that its firing of Drew Johnson for the title of his editorial, "Take Your Jobs Plan And Shove It, Mr. President," was unrelated to content, and merely a case of an insubordinate editor changing his headline to a riff on a song by Nashville singer Johnny PayCheck over another headline. Frankly, it's hard to believe.
For one thing, it's odd in the news industry to fire someone over a headline that could easily be reversed on the Internet, if that's the issue. And it's strange for a newspaper to be angry about a headline that must have drawn hundreds of thousands of hits to the paper's website, with a prominent link on the Drudge Report.
Would they prefer a dull headline over one that readers wanted to click?
Lastly, Johnson said he changed headlines all the time at the last minute, something common in the industry.

The narcissist cannot handle criticism.
Absolutely, that was no coincidence, IMO.
Obummer was in the middle of that bailout and conservative owners were axed no matter their superior sales.
Putting them in Gulags would be tame, compared to what they would really like to do. I think that friend of Odumbo said they would like to eliminate 30 million of us. If they did that, it wouldn't surprise me either. Would 30 million people go quietly into the night? I am not sure one way or another.
I don’t think of Chattanooga as being particularly liberal...
I read the book by Caliph Baraq’s “auto czar” Steve “the rat” Rattner who oversaw the GM and Chrysler bankruptcies.
Funny thing was the Congress critter who gave them the most pushback on the dealer closures was Gabby Giffords.
The "Times Free Press" is pretty liberal, despite having an opposing view page. They do a left-right wing on the editorial page, but the rest of the paper is pretty much AP-liberal.
The city itself - while it's somewhat conservative, it has plenty of liberals just waiting in the wings to turn Chattanooga into the next Detroit. Fortunately, we have some really alert and attentive conservatives around town.
Lest we forget, RINO Senator Corker was previously the Mayor of Chattanooga.
Changing headlines at any time is totally common. I did it at our paper daily. You WANT attention grabbing headlines. That’s the whole freaking POINT of a headline.
This is the result of someone, either local advertizers or political operatives turning the screws.
Period.
Love that outlet mall there and taking in the views at the top of the hill and pretending I can see 5 states.
Beautiful area.
Thanks for your concise post, most interesting.
Bump.
If they pick them off one by one, each individual/paper/ news outlet will back off and be intimidated. IF they all got together and announced, from the skies: “WE were intimidated by Obama” they would outnumber ALL the Chicago thugs in the WH.
“They came for the editor in Chattanooga, but it didn’t affect me, so I did nothing.”
YES!
It simply amazes me how many people let themselves be bullied by Ophonybama!
Headlines are changed/redone for all kinds of reasons. Size primarily to fit available space with the layout. But just because you are given i=one by whoever, AP included does not mean you are obligated to use it. Most people don’t know how a paper works so it’s not surprising this is a ‘controversy’. In truth it is being MADE into one.
“If Obama were any more thin skinned, he’d have a reservoir tip,” joked Dennis Miller
If so it backfired. Now the whole country has seen the headline.
I bet there were a few un-traceable calls put in-—I bet some from the Oval Office.
If Obama were any more thin skinned, hed have a reservoir tip, joked Dennis Miller
Ba-da-bing!
Yes! :-)
