WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Postal Service takes pictures of every piece of mail processed in the United States - 160 billion last year - and keeps them on hand for up to a month.
In an interview with The Associated Press, Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe said the photos of the exterior of mail pieces are used primarily for the sorting process, but they are available for law enforcement, if requested.
The photos have been used "a couple of times" by to trace letters in criminal cases, Donahoe told the AP on Thursday, most recently involving ricin-laced letters sent to President Barack Obama and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Just like those ATF background checks are scrubbed too, with copies to the NSA for just in case.

They’ve been photographing the outside for more than 10 years.
It’s documented in the book “The Anthrax Letters”, which is almost impossible to find at retail price now and which has been snagged out of libraries.

The “junk mail” already has barcodes on it, so it steps ahead in the process. BTW, what does it cost you for evey digital photo that you take and store on your computer? I bet we are all going broke bc of that. LOL

Why would the PO keep them for only a month? Shouldnt it keep them until the letters are delivered?LOL...well done. The only post that is funnier is from the guy who thinks the USPS is scanning the insides.

There is no need to go looking for expensive and complex solutions. The very same aluminum foul that now protects your head from mind control beams may be used to safeguard your letters from absolutely every "snooping" device currently in use.
BTW all, my local office had a sign out front: "Two for one fine art scanning this Saturday!". Looks like they are finding ways to raise that extra cash...

It takes time and it takes time to organize and categorize.

Should have read your post before I posted mine. Arghhh....
Anyway, sent email to Mr. hummingbird that we had received mail today from PA and that I didn't know anyone in PA. - did he.
"Who's Dick Hurtz?" with the address. Let's watch...

That is because you do it. It would cost you no time or money if your camera and computer did it for you.
Now stop playing pretend. I have time for actual curiosity. I have no time for stubborn ignorance.

Most of us already knew about the MICT (Mail Isolation Control and Tracking) system which is one of several used. Its also easy to extrapolate that they have the ability to see inside envelopes as well because science has been able to see under the paintings of the masters for at least 30 years now. I figure the feral government will do anything it damn well pleases in regards to any communication, be it electronic, spoken, snail-mail, or whatever. You see, they are willing to kill you for your offering them the slightest bit of resistance to anything they might do. Until we reach the same point, they'll do anything they want.

What about the day they start setting up checkpoints on the interstates and highways? That ship sailed years ago.
Conservatives were OK with it, because it had official "Drug War" stamps on it.

Don’t respond to me then.
PS I actually worked at the post office and know for a fact that the possibilities for waste there are infinite ... which is why they are going bust.

LOL. Logic are reason are not your strong suits, are they? The possibilities for waste are infinite everywhere, including FR as you have aptly demonstrated. As for your, "...which is why they are going bust" comment, you don't have a grasp of the facts either. You must be a very blissful person. Now go buy a clue at Amazon and ship it USPS. I'm done with your foolishness.
