Well then let's offshore all American jobs and really teach those unions!!!!
Even a broken clock is right twice a day. The Unions were right that imports could destroy American jobs. It was the wrong argument to use when we were at full employment. It's not the wrong argument now that we are at 25% unemployment.
Again - tariffs are designed to shield unions from competition. If the unions are the only game in town - they will make a killing. This will increase the misallocation of capital.
Long term, it will turn the US from a developed nation back into a developing one that requires a tariff shield in order to remain domestically competitive. It will remove her from international competition.
Tariffs are the answer if you want Great Depression II. They are not the answer if you want competitive American businesses to thrive internationally. The US is getting killed by high corporate tax rates, and increasingly high domestic taxes. What incentive is there for a business to locate itself in America?
The solution to getting America working again is to slash corporate taxes to be competitive with other jurisdictions.
