When we were little my little sister was told by my dad that the bananas were not spoiled black, they were ripe. So, later, when talking of “colored people” (this was the late 60’s) she quipped, “They’re not black, they ripe.”

That's funny. My Mom used to tell a story about my little sister seeing black people in a car parked at a light. According to Mom, little sis said, 'Oooohhh, wash your face! Wash your face.'
