Group sues FBI for records after Michael Hastings’ mysterious death

A journalist and a researcher have sued the Justice Department for access to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s records on the late journalist Michael Hastings.

The lawsuit follows the FBI’s failure to respond to separate Freedom of Information Act requests for records on Hastings submitted by journalist Jason Leopold of al-Jazeera and Massachusetts Institute of Technology researcher Ryan Shapiro.

Agencies are required by statute to notify applicants about whether it will fulfill their requests within a 20-working-day period of the initial application.

In the hours before his death, which was ruled an accident by the Los Angeles Police Department, Hastings emailed Wikileaks’ lawyer Jennifer Robinson that he was being investigated by the federal government.

Staff Sgt. Joseph Biggs — who knew Hastings when he was embedded with Bigg’s unit in Afghanistan — told KTLA Hastings had blind copied him on an email sent 15 hours before his death, notifying colleagues that federal officials were interviewing his “close friends and associates.”

Leopold, a personal friend of Hastings, wrote in a piece published on the Freedom of the Press Foundation’s website that a government investigation into Hastings would not be a surprise.

“Given the nature of Hastings’s investigative work and the revelations that have surfaced about the government’s interest in journalists’ sources it wouldn’t come as a surprise to me if some agency was looking into Hastings’s journalistic activities,” said Leopold

No evidence because the freakin Mercedes exploded with such force the engine was sent 50 to 60 yards. No skid marks as the car turns 60 degrees into a tree....

Are you retarded? Ever heard of circumstantial evidence?

It’s how sane people investigate things and build a picture of truth.

Why won’t the LAPD make the Mercedes available for inspection or release the reports?

We have an upstanding citizen, with a job, who is planning to reveal evidence of government conspiracy, and who leaves an UNKNOWN place at 4am and drives down sidestreets at high speed until he crashes into a fire hydrant and tree, upon which the car explodes in all consuming fire.

Why would someone in his position go speeding off like this in the middle of the twilight hours ?

That's an uncomfortable question to ask of someone who is obviously more comfortable accepting and explaining the inexplicable as, "Move along -- nothing to see here."

I guess that Jack Wheeler just wandered around looking for a dumpster to dive in to after he hit himself in the head with a baseball bat. No evidence that he didn’t , right ?

Aah, Wheeler. He and his never-explained demise is just another distant memory. Another Whistle-Blower is found...dead. At a dump. And no one cares, nor has ever attempted to investigate. But our friend can easily explain it:

"Move along -- nothing to see here."

Sound familiar?

“No evidence because the freakin Mercedes exploded with such force the engine was sent 50 to 60 yards. No skid marks as the car turns 60 degrees into a tree....”

You see, this is where a basic knowledge of physics comes in handy. There’s a little something called “conservation of momentum”. So, when an engine that weighs say, 500 pounds is attached to a car traveling over 100 mph, and the car comes to a dead stop from hitting an immovable object, like a tree, that engine’s momentum doesn’t disappear. If the momentum is sufficient, the engine will break free from the car and then it will keep traveling on its merry way. No “explosion” is required.

Also, drunks that nod off, or people that have a seizure or medical emergency may not hit their brakes, so no skid marks is not necessarily unusual either. If you can’t eliminate the potential mundane explanations for these things, then you have no reasonable basis for leaping to some extraordinary explanation. That’s how sane people investigate things.

“Why won’t the LAPD make the Mercedes available for inspection or release the reports?”

Since when do police departments ever make evidence available for public inspection? Never heard of that. As for the reports, I don’t know that they are even finished investigating. Just because armchair sleuths on the internet think they have the case all figured out doesn’t mean the LAPD will work according to your timetable.

The engine was BEHIND the car, f**ktard. Try to keep up, or your BS just looks stupid.

No, it wasn’t. That was false information put out by irresponsible conspiracy theorists, that duped people like you because they are not skeptical:

Try to keep up, and watch your language, this is a family site.
