Fast food workers strike: ‘I can’t afford my shoes or rent’
[p]MSNBC ^ | July 29, 2013 | Ned Resnikoff

Posted on 07/29/2013 5:19:17 PM PDT by kevcol

“We’re building a movement of fast food workers in a way that has never really existed in the fast food industry,” said Jonathan Westin, an organizer for New York Communities for Change, who noted that this week is the first time the strikes have been coordinated across cities.
.
.
The Congressional Progressive Caucus launched a campaign called “Raise Up America” which has taken efforts to associate itself with the fast food workers. Several members of the caucus, including its co-chair, Democratic Rep. Keith Ellison of Minnesota, were present at Monday’s actions in New York.
.
.
Similarly, Brooklyn-based McDonald’s employee Kareem Starks said he has little to lose by going out on strike.

“I don’t make much,” Starks said. “I get treated like crap. At he end of the day, should I stand up or take this? Should I stand up or live like this? … I can’t afford my shoes or afford my rent. Is that how you’re supposed to be living?”

It already does in Manhattan.

A number 6 is about 9 bucks... for 9 bucks I can get a great burger at any number of the lunch markets, or a really good one for 9 bucks at a food truck.

Dolts. Even worse though, are the idiot liberal commentators on the articles site.

They leave me aghast at how shallow and dumb people can be; I mean you have to lack any type of contextual or critical thinking skill to believe the types of arguments and points they post there. It is sad and I feel embarrassed for them.

Good visual aid. Plenty of money means it’s worth less = worthless. African countries tried to make everyone rich turned out it took a wheelbarrow full of money to buy a loaf of bread.

They want $15 an HOUR?

What at bunch of morons. Why aren’t they asking for $100 and hour so they can settle midway at $50. Sheesh. No one is going to get a big house, big car, diamonds and pearls for a lousy $15 an hour!

No! Wait! $200 an hour! That’s even better and cuts in half their time to riches.

No! Wait! $300 an hour! That’s even better and cuts in, um, er, a third(?) their time to riches. (Sorry, this math thing is starting to confuse me a little.)

But, anyway, they need some serious leadership down there.

I’m mute, so I have to write my order down if I’m on my own.

NOT ragging on you here BUT why do you think those registers and ‘menus’ have pictures and the cash register ‘tells’ them how much change?

So if we pay them $15 an hour to flip burgers, they are going to start charging $6 for a burger. Then we will have to pay them $20 an hour so they can afford the $6 burgers. Then the burgers will go up to $10 and we’ll have to pay them $25 an hour...and round and round we go.
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
Just the tip of the iceberg.
When the construction people start ordering off the $5.00 menu (rather than the 1)they are going to DEMAND more pay to make up the difference the extra $4.00 per item is going to cost them at each stop.
Of course gas will have to go up as the minimum wager at the gas station will be getting in on the fun.
I don’t know if it is still the same, but I thought at one time the Unions were ALL FOR the raise in minimum wage because their contracts called for them to make XX% ABOVE the minimum wage.

I know I am not to far off when saying actually (seemingly) had more money as a SN(E3) in the Navy when $75.00 a month left you with a little for cigarettes etc and a beer at the slop chute long about 2 days before payday.

Looking at these cigarettes today at 5 bucks (give or take) a PACK and realize that in ‘57 (aboard ship) for 5 bucks you could get 4 cartons plus .50 change....

I’ve basically stopped eating fast food because I don’t trust anyone behind the counter.

Too many internet photos of low-life kids doing strange things at fast-food restaurants, in addition to low-life angry leftists protesting. God knows what they could do to the food in anger, or stupidity.

You are not now, nor have you ever been entitled to affording anything beyond the amount which you earn.

There’s no need to fire them and give them another reason to bitch to a willing press.

Just schedule them for one hour per week and attribute it to health care cost issues. Then tell the PR Dept. to keep its doors closed and its phones on silent.

Perhaps if some had paid attention in school and really tried to apply themselves instead of listening to that vitriol they call music and trying to be gangsta wannabes ; maybe just maybe they would have a better lot in the game of life. Now of course the world needs ditch diggers to.

Convicted felons belong in prisons not out on society flipping anything.

So you feel any felony conviction should be a life sentence? Or do you believe that once someone has done their time they should be released back into society. Or should they just be killed?

Quit and get another job ... not rocket science. If nobody will work for that wage, then wages will rise until they will work.

Fast “food” “workers” — losers. These parasites do not realize that their situation is due to the culmination choices they have made during their pathetic lives.

Talk about B.S....

This is not a career job morons. This is not a career job morons. Want more pay ? Get an education

Maybe you should read the article.

The people in the article were complaining about not being able to afford basic things like shoes and rent... Not new cars, Hawaiian vacations etc.

Why work if you're not even paid enough for the most basic things?

Do you consider shoes and rent luxuries or lavish?
