It was not accurate. To come up with 47%, Romney had to assume that everyone on social security, unemployment, food stamps, medicare and medicaid are Democrats. It's not true.

There are plenty of retired Republicans that draw Social Security and are on Medicare. There are plenty of Republicans that are unemployed, thanks to the outsourcing of jobs to China, that still believe Republican policies are best.

It was a foolish comment and it was untrue. It stereotyped everyone on those programs as die hard democrats.

His 47% figure had nothing to do with social security, unemployment, food stamps, medicare, and medicaid. He said, "These are people who pay no income tax.".

That figure is correct to within half a percent.

Now, he obviously wasn't arguing that every single person without exception who doesn't pay income tax will vote for Obama...that would be absurd on its face. On the other hand, is it not fair to say that such people are on the whole predisposed to vote for the Democrats? This is supported by recent poll which found that among those with household incomes of less than $30K, voters favored Obama over Romney by 61 to 32 percent.
