At a Hispanic Listening Session Friday, Paul Ryan met a man he said summed up why hes pushing to reform the countrys immigration system.
Gustavo Vargas described coming to the U.S. from Mexico to work, without detailing his immigration status. When his five-year-old son died, Vargas said, he made the hard decision to bury the boy here.
He and his family love the United States, and we want to stay here, to live, Vargas told the congressman. Later, he said quietly that he wasnt looking for attention, I just wanted him to understand.
In front of around 300 people in St. Patricks Church, Ryan shook Vargas hand. You asked the reason why Im doing this? Thats why. Thats why Im doing this, he told the crowd.
Ryan, a Republican from Janesville whose district includes all of Racine County, laid out his vision for passing what he called lasting immigration reform Friday, speaking at the church at 1111 Douglas Ave.
Immigration is a good thing for this country; immigration is this country, Ryan said.
The congressman and recent vice presidential candidate has been working as bridge-builder between fellow Republicans, seeking support to pass sweeping reform piece by piece, and potentially vote this October.
Although the Senate passed its own reform package earlier this summer, I think we (in the House) can do a much better job, Ryan told The Journal Times. I think that we have to have real, verifiable border enforcement, real, verifiable workplace enforcement, a visa tracking system, and I think we have to have a system that makes sure we respect the rule of law ... with these probationary visas. Thats the basic concept that Im describing... that, I think, is where the consensus lies.
Its a way to keep the system fair, according to Ryan.

Romney picked this jackass for his VP and couldn’t understand why he lost.
Defeating Obama should have been a slam dunk for the Republicans but we chose the two biggest losers in the party to run.
fair?
Fair to legalize identity theft for foreign invaders?
Fair to give hundreds of millions of tax dollars to radical left organizations?
Fair to give a pass for criminal activities they have done, using many different identities, working jobs with papers, filling our prisons with robbers, rapists etc
OH
Putting criminal invaders on an easier path to citizenship than those trying to get it LEGALLY
somehow this is fair?
How about if 20 million Americans demanded that a foreign country accept us and give us benefits for life paid for by their beleaguered taxpayers. Do you think any country would think this is “fair”?
“Fair” has outed yourself as a socialist.
“Fair” does not mean “Right”
Paul Ryan: The Marco Rubio of the House
It is not fair to have to pay for the mistakes and frauds of others.
Ryan is THIS STUPID???? OMG....we are Lawless AND LEADERLESS.
So the local Dem party newsletter is cheering on the destruction iPod the country by this Billionaire slave labor.
Ryan a useful idiot of K st and too dumb to win a debate against Grady joe is the messenger.
This tell us how stupid the Bonehead / McConnell / Cantor/ Gowdy/ Issa/ Gooodlatte traitors are and their hatred for the GOP base.
I will travel Ito WI to protest this clown in August .
But he will be hiding from the legal citizens.
It is time to remove all of them in primary season.
They are Democrat K street zombies.
It’s all about fairness dont ya know
The “system” is very fair the way it was established into law. The only two problems with our immigration system is that not enough attention is paid to ensuring that those who migrate to the US don’t become welfare burdens, and the second problem is that the President refuses to allow the INS to enforce current law.
Sadly, my personal view of Paul Ryan is damaged each time he speaks on this subject. I’ve donated money to one of his previous campaigns, and I have family members who voted for him (I’m not eligible, as I don’t live in his district). But I won’t be supporting him anymore, and I believe that none of the dozen or so family members who voted for him in previous elections will be supporting him in the future, either.
Mr. Ryan, you’re going the way of Rubio. And that’s one career we’re literally watching “fizzle,” day by day.
Bye-bye!
D.C. has been sold and is owned we are on our own.
This tell us how stupid the Bonehead / McConnell / Cantor/ Gowdy/ Issa/ Gooodlatte traitors are and their hatred for the GOP base.
Gowdy? I would exclude him from the group..
This assclown needs replaced. What we need is a fence and boarder patrole like the europeans had before the euro unificartion. Showed a passport and if not you didn’t get in.
Oh, Ryan, just shut up.
Wonder what their response would be if their 9 month old or 93 year old grandma was raped to death? What about their teenage daughter? I guess in their mind illegal alien rape is great for America. Wonder if the 30 pieces of silver is worth having one of your family members raped by an illegal alien rapist. I know they don’t care about our families. Re-blood-licans are so easy they make 5 dollar hookers look high class. Sorry to insult 5 dollar hookers. At least they earn their money.
The guy can lift his weights till the cows come home, but he’s proven himself to be a spineless twat when it comes to the philosophical calesthenics that matter most.
“It’s a way to keep the system fair.” said Ryan.
Sure. Reward scofflaw line-jumpers and ignore those who tried to play by the rules. That’s fair.
And it makes sense—if it were being shoveled by Jay Carney. Is Ryan bucking for the Fatherland Sekurity job?
Paul, you lost me months ago...about the same time as your buddy rubio. You have gone the way of the rinos. Nothing you say is of any interest to us. Get lost until you acquire a little common sense. You’ve been locked with your figures for too long. No new laws. Enforce the laws now on the books *these are NOT written in invisible ink*
Somebody please put me out of my misery and stand up at a Paul Ryan townhall and ask one question. “When have we ever had 30 million people allowed to legally immigrate to America from essentially one country?”
30 million Irish, Italians, French, Romanian, Greek, etc never immigrated here. Its supposed to be a melting pot not a Hispanic pot.
