Gasoline sales are certainly interesting, but they don't know what we're driving. These are wild-a** estimates. I simply caution against thinking they're solid numbers.

Refineries make relatively few retail sales and they do less than they used to do. That is all that chart is telling. It is only a small fraction of the gasoline sold in the US. These days, more sales go from the refinery through a blender before retail sales to make the specific recipe for that area. Compare actual total sales:
