just a generation or two Egyptians were wearing western clothes, skirts and suits to college.... now they are becoming just another Burkastan
the lower classes started going islamic dress at least 20 years ago
the middle and upper class Egyptians were contemptuous of it and saw it as a political statement by the poor and the rebellious to look pious and rebuke “the system” from which the poor felt disenfranchised
kinda like hoodies!
In Turkey, Ataturk knew what he was doing when he banned the veil
who’da thunk that 20 years later all the women in Egypt would be going under the veil for their own and their family’s protection from zealots and islamic Bolsheviks in their own society
Look more closely at the crowds. Both the Army and the anti Mubarraks are highly westernized, right down to their Nikes. It’s only the Morsi’s who are the retro knuckle dragging, baggy pants, 12th century types. Over the long haul I’m betting on the young crowd to run out of patience with the flying carpet bunch.
