HOUSTON -- A 52-year-old Houston woman was in critical condition after a vicious mauling by a pack of at least 15 stray dogs.
It happened around 6 a.m. on Monday near Lyons and Eastex Freeway in the Fifth Ward.
According to family members, Maria Arcos was walking to a nearby bus stop. She was on her way to start her first day on a new job as a housekeeper.
Arcos only made it about halfway.
She was under an overpass when a pack of mixed-breed strays surrounded her and brought her to the ground.
Its a pack mentality. That can happen when theres an aggressive act by one and it continues, said City of Houston Animal Control Manager Chris Glaser.
Glaser said a railroad employee saw Arcos being terrorized and dialed for help.
With that many dogs on her, she was being drug up and down the street, Glaser said.
Arcos was still conscious when officers arrived, but her family said the stress of the mauling caused her to have a heart attack.
Supposedly in 48 hours, if she doesnt get better, shes not going to make it, said stepson Oscar Reyes.

I have a sincere question...were you not concerned that the dog may have been rabid?
The person who shot the dog had the right.
If you have ever hunted, you know that an arrow or bullet do not do the same thing every time.
Taking a second shot at a running dog is stupid.
no dogs allowed in Texas deer hunting. Not sure why...
I had an "O Crap!" moment when the EM asked where the dog was. I asked him why and he said if I can't produce him, the wife would have to undergo the rabies shots.
We are in a semi-developed area in that during the housing boom, some developer came in, created 1/2 acre parcels and installed tarmac roads - then when bankrupt after selling only five houses. There were lots of vacant areas.
Neighbors had come over to see if they could help and I made a posse of them to search for the dog, as I knew he couldn't have gone far. Sure enough, in a clump of bushes less than 100 yards off, he was found, and luckily proved rabies free.
What is weird is that I was merely commenting on a common problem rural folks have with city people coming out and dumping their unwanted pets and causing all kinds of collateral grief. I didn't feel like going into detail as no one would be interested in a common occurrence.
Instead, 5th MEB and Eaker, two candidates for the Olympic Gold Medal for Conclusion Jumping, repeatedly shot their mouths off, cloaking themselves in a bogus nobility, and posting all kinds of juvenile name calling (I'm a Muslim? Jesus, don't tell my Rabbi. :-) :-). )
Miss 5th MEB even emailed* me with additional idiotic comments, which is another indication of what I am dealing with.
* as in "You are obviously an ignorant ass city boy when it comes to tracking and killing, so I dont think your comments are relevant or for that matter worth continuing this conversation. So; BY BY NOW."
My responses end now
Guess not.
I had an "O Crap!" moment when the EM asked where the dog was.
Did you tell him you have a halo because you were so smart, cool and tough that you just wounded the dog so it could run off and die in pain rather than finishing the job?
Wee halo fell right the hell off didn't it?
PS: We weren't "shooting our mouths off" as we were right and you were wrong.
PPS: Had the dog's body not been found your wife would be getting rabies shots and you would have been an even bigger POS. (I bet you wouldn't have come back and posted about her pain because of your arrogance though.)
If I had done such a thing myself, the last thing I’d do is brag on it in a public forum.
The private shame would be punishment enough.
Someday I’ll tell the story of the suffering cat “who wouldn’t die”.
It was horrible and even though a good 10 years have passed, I think of him every time I see a black cat.
{{{shudder}}}
How fascinating that we *now* get the ‘rest of the story’ which, coincidentally, neatly ties up all those obnoxious loose threads.
Funny thing about forums...you can say anything you want and nobody can make you prove it.
Very...funny, that.
Whatever makes you happy.
What a blithe non-answer.
Halo got me.
Rabies thing and all huh?
Maybe you should start a thread explaining to all FReeperdom that THIS is the way to handle a situation like this.
Please ping me to it Mr. Expert.
