The U.S. government has attempted to obtain the master encryption keys that Internet companies use to shield millions of users' private Web communications from eavesdropping.
These demands for master encryption keys, which have not been disclosed previously, represent a technological escalation in the clandestine methods that the FBI and the National Security Agency employ when conducting electronic surveillance against Internet users.
If the government obtains a company's master encryption key, agents could decrypt the contents of communications intercepted through a wiretap or by invoking the potent surveillance authorities of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. Web encryption -- which often appears in a browser with a HTTPS lock icon when enabled -- uses a technique called SSL, or Secure Sockets Layer.
"The government is definitely demanding SSL keys from providers," said one person who has responded to government attempts to obtain encryption keys. The source spoke with CNET on condition of anonymity.
The person said that large Internet companies have resisted the requests on the grounds that they go beyond what the law permits, but voiced concern that smaller companies without well-staffed legal departments might be less willing to put up a fight. "I believe the government is beating up on the little guys," the person said. "The government's view is that anything we can think of, we can compel you to do."

I read your mail. Can’t reply, says I’m still a newbie. However, I do post a comment on every thread I post so it can receive a reply.
Yeah? There’s no way to reply to the Malaysia: Call to ‘prosecute actors in drag’ thread you posted.
Somehow it got posted with no first comment.

Does no one see Hitler’s Germany here?
Where is the outcry?
Guess we are the frog in the pot with the water slowly being brought to a boil........who will be totallly shocked when we find we are cooked........
It’s over folks. It’s over. A whack at day at the roots with the federal/Marxist/Obama axe, and the tree has started to fall.......imperceptably slowly at first, but watch it pick up momemtum.......
(Tree-feller/heater with wood for 40 years.)
Once the giant has started falling, there is no stopping her. She’s going down and the crash at the bottom is ginormous..........
We have got to get rid of the Patriot Act.
We've got to just stop passing legislation that nobody has had time to read, period. "We've got to pass it to find out what's in it" should be grounds for immediate recall, if not being shot.
“Yep, this is all of your online banking, purchases, and etc.”
Bingo! This isn’t about terrorism or anything like that. It’s about being able to tax and confiscate wealth.
This is called "Tyranny" and is the classic definition.
America has been over for quite a while. This is the first of the rachet-up measures.
The next ones are:
1) Prosecution for political speech that is not 'approved'.
2) Imprisonment for political action that is not 'approved'.
4) Confiscation of property, or forced-relocation of people who are considered 'opposition'.
5) Denial of guaranteed liberties of people who are considered 'opposition'.
6) Murder of families and individuals who are considered 'opposition'. The murder can be direct, or indirect (such as orchestrated food-shortages).
This game has been played a hundred times in history, and will be played here in America next.
Republican democracy my ass!
For later
Something stinks here, and it stinks real bad.
The Boston bombing is easy -- Holderbama didn't WANT to prevent it because they can use it to justify the FBI/ATF's illegal home searches and to "condition" us to accept it in the future. Also, to justify the need for NSA's unconstitutional eavesdropping.
The Snowden "fiasco?" I'm beginning to think it's not as it appears. If Holderbama et al wanted all Americans to know about the comprehensive snooping (and thus think we have NO secrets), what's the best way to let everyone know? What's the best way to break that news if they wanted to brainwash as many people as possible that "resistance is futile?" It's not as if obama could call a presser in the Rose Garden to tell us. They would need a leaker, an event as big as Snowden to make sure EVERYONE heard the news.
As for Snowden himself, there are many possibilities. Maybe he was used w/o his knowledge. Or maybe he's complicit and was in on it, as well as Putin. Or maybe he was supposed to be Fostered but he outsmarted them.
Or, then again, maybe our entire intelligence apparatus is too inept and too intellectually-challenged to use all their fancy NSA-eavesdropping knowledge to prevent a 3rd-rate pressure cooker bombing and a pimply-faced Gen-Xer from making us look like fools.
I can't decide what's the best fit for Occam's razor. :-/
I’ll go with door #1.
I believe you are correct about the conditioning that occurred after Boston.
Door #1 for you, then — everyone running the intel agencies in our federal government is diabolically evil and spawns of Satan. ;-)
Do we have any takers for Door #2, that everyone running the Intel agencies in our entire federal government is just plain clueless, stuck on stupid, and needs to go work at their neighborhood car wash?
