A pair of hikers who had been rescued after getting lost in the fog and rain inside a Maine state park drowned on Tuesday night when their car plunged into the water off a boat launch as they were trying to leave.
Amy Stiner, 37, and Melissa Moyer, 38, were found dead inside a minivan in 20 feet of water about 175 feet from the boat ramp on the edge of Roque Bluffs State Park, the Washington County Sheriff's Department said. A dog, a pit bull mix who was with them, also drowned.
Officials say the women, who had just been returned to their vehicle by a game warden, took a wrong turn as they were driving away from the parking area.
"The end of the road becomes the boat landing and they just weren't familiar with it," Washington County Sheriff Donnie Smith told the Kennebec Journal. "It was foggy and rainy and they literally drove off the boat landing right into the water."(continued)

This is terrible!
I don’t know, maybe there was something Biblical going on here.
How bizarre.
A few years ago an SUV with four women drove off the roadway in Newark NJ into the Passaic River; they called 911 as the SUV filled with water but nobody (including them) knew exactly where they were (all 4 drowned).
Somehow it reminds me of trying to save Detroit.
Sad, but Darwin Award candidates for sure.
This is tragic. An emergency glass hammer under $20.00 and they would be alive.
I knew that one of your kind would show up and comment on this story.
Man...when it’s your time there is no avoiding it! What an awful story
Concur.. Darwin award nominees.
Why call 911? how about breaking the window or rolling it down or something that might be useful.
I've taken chicks camping before who can't find their way around Target, much less around the woods.
I had one that went down and filled her waders up in a 3-foot wide and deep trout stream.
I had to risk my own life to save hers as she was headed downstream submerged.
Never again.
I don’t understand. Their vehicle is filling up with water and they call 911. Did they think responders were going to find them before they drowned? The whole story just seems bizarre.
When your number comes up you are leaving this world.
Stupidass statement.......you trying to hijack the thread?
I’d imagine pure panic; it happened at night, they were unsure as to where they were, and I was surprised they had time to call 9/11.
No pugnacious one. It was a comment on the helplessness of trying to save these girls. It would be like trying to bail out Detroit. Get it?
Sorry they died, but Darwin was their cousin obviously.
between the "darwin award" jerks and the women haters like you, I'm sure you can fill up that Petition for 4th trimester abortions....
