A 55-gallon drum of uranium was found Thursday in the area of a dismantled airplane at Opa-locka Executive Airport, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.

The area has been evacuated while a hazmat team from Miami International Airport assess the situation as well as a possible spill.

Teams are “monitoring levels of radiation,” fire-rescue spokesman Arnold Piedrahita said Thursday afternoon on Twitter. So far, “minimum” levels have been detected, he said.

I'll be danged. I went by there about five years ago and thought it would be closed by now based upon what I saw.

Good to know.

Only vinegar and baking soda were allowed for experiments here. Anything else and they’d freak out !

I can drive my pickup 3 hours north of where I live, load the bed to the rails with uranium ore on the side of the road and drive wherever I want. Unless I have the capability of refining it a bit, it is just fill dirt.

I usually store my Uranium next to my Iraqi crude oil in the backyard. I must have forgot this one barrel.

1 pound of Uranium will make a ball around 1.3 inches in diameter.

A 55-gallon drum is 13,320 cubic inches, enough to hold 10,246 pounds.

A pound of uranium is currently $36.50 a pound. Therefore - if full and of trade quality (both unlikely) - a 55-gallon drum would be worth approximately $374,000.

Did the ‘dismantled airplane’ bear markings of the former Iraqi Air Force?

Eh...the WMD thing was funnier before I typed it.
