'Lone Ranger': Cleft-Lip Charities Upset Over William Fichtner's Villain

Organizations condemn the movie for using the facial feature to make a character appear more evil.

Disney's The Lone Ranger is facing a fresh round of controversy over one of its characters, but this time Johnny Depp's portrayal of a Native American isn't the subject of the outrage.

Instead, charities are upset that William Fichtner's Butch Cavendish features a cleft lip, a prosthetic that may have been added in part to make him appear more sinister.

According to the character synopsis, Cavendish's "terribly scarred face is a perfect reflection of the bottomless pit that passes for his soul."

Oh, good grief. In the photo, the scar looks like something he got from a knife cut. The character description says his face is heavily scarred. Cleft lips are birth abnormalities, not scars. Scars are caused by damage to normal features. Al "Scarface" Capone got his scar from a knife wound. People got scars from smallpox.

As for people being outraged about Depp playing Tonto, those same people thought it was great for a black actor to play the Viking god Thor. People who complained about that were called racist.

If the movie were to be boycotted, would anyone notice?

I don't think the numbers would be any less.

Maybe they'd get more viewers if they renamed it “TONTO and friend”

I admit that I have not seen it. I was looking forward to it when the trailers came out, but the reviews convinced me to stay away. It’s basically $50 for me to take my kids to a movie, so we don’t take many chances. It must really be awful.

As soon as I saw Tonto with a CROW strapped to his head, I knew I didn’t need to see it.

Cleft lips are birth abnormalities, not scars.

True, but years ago the repair of those deformities used to leave a visible scar. Not so much now, with improved surgical techniques.

I would care if I saw the movie.

Would I, would I.

Cleft lip surgeries have gotten so good over the past 30 years, you likely would never be able to tell if someone had been born with it.

I just figured that Indians, masters at surviving in the untamed wilderness, would have been smarter than to walk around with a festering, decaying, maggot and disease ridden bird sitting atop their heads.

Little known fact about Doc Holiday: He had a cleft lip that was fixed by a relative who was a dentist in what was probably one of the first operations of its kind. His mustache covered his scar.

I saw it and thought it was pretty entertaining. It’s an action movie with humor. Summertime fare.

Just so you know: it’s not for little kids - there are some gruesome scenes. The Lone Ranger is portrayed as dumb but heroic. Tonto is wise but funny (the bird on the head thing is actually played pretty well for laughs). The bad guy is a businessman (like every other movie of the last fifty years). High production values and good stunts.

People in Support of One-Armed Persons must have complained when the Fugitive came out. Could anyone imagine what hunchbacks would do with the Quilp character in Dickens’ Curiosity Shoppe?

For what it’s worth, a black actor didn’t play Thor, he played Heimdall, which of course runs equally afoul of the Norse tradition.

Okay, we will probably check it out for home viewing. We aren’t exactly movie snobs; we even liked John Carter.

A friend of mine saw it and thought it very funny. Johnny Depp reprising his Capt. Jack Sparrow routine in buckskin and a dead bird head dress.

The Lone Ranger and Tonto look to the top of a prairie ridge only to see hundreds of Indians on horseback.

Lone Ranger: "Looks like we're in trouble, Tonto."

Tonto: "What you mean we paleface?"
