That’s precisely what it was. The end of the Mosaic Age and the ushering in of the Messianic Age. The book of Hebrews will spell it out for you.
There are hundreds and hundreds of prophetic scriptures concerning the end of the age. More so than any other event foretold in the collection of books that makeup today's Bible. If I had to pick only a couple dealing with the season of this end of age, spoken of by the prophets, it would be these two verses spoken by the one Moses proclaimed to the Israelites, they must listen to.
For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.
