Regulations: Are automakers designing cars for drivers or federal bureaucrats? It's worth asking. Tests found that some top-rated cars performed far worse in the real world than they did in official EPA mileage tests.
Consumer Reports, the widely respected consumer product testing magazine, set out to determine whether those fuel mileage stickers the government requires on all cars are realistic.
So it tested 315 cars against their official EPA ratings and came up with an interesting finding.
While most cars came close to the government's fuel economy rating, two categories didn't hybrids and cars with small, turbocharged engines. Both, mind you, advertise big mpg numbers. Yet the average hybrid in the test did 10% worse than the EPA estimate.
~snip~
But given Obama's decision to force cars to get an average of 54.5 mpg in less than 12 years, automakers will be even more tempted to design to the test, rather than the real world, thus adding to the consumer deception.

When Americans are out here having to put up with this crap, the Kenyan will be cooling his heels on the beach in Hawaii drinking Pina Coladas, counting his money and laughing his *** off at us.
What I know is that my 2012 compact car was supposed to get 40 mpg. I never got more than about 35 mpg. Then I moved to a new state (from California to Georgia) and low and behold my mpg is hovering right around 39 mpg (and the price is about 75 cents less a gallon).
That aside the o admin is bound and determined to drive the US into third world status come hell or high water.
My 2013 Hemi Challenger gets the rated MPG if not more.
A POTUS allowed to force this is a tyrant. Remember that the alcohol ban took an amendment. Now they write regs with just as much harm to liberty as if it were a sales slip.
In CA we are mandated to sell Gasoline having 10% Ethanol.
Ethanol produces less energy than Gasoline. There is your 10% right there.
Then you’re just not driving it right Son. It’s a Hemi after all...
Time to add some lead to your right foot. LOL
My 23 year-old diesel Jetta still gets 40MPG routinely. best car in the world.
Uh, my small turbocharged Diesel MANUAL Transmission cars came out just fine.
Bump. :-)
In the metro Atlanta area they have to do 10% ethanol as well. California also has there special oxygenated blends that are useless.
Georgia gas pumps also do not have the secondary hose for ‘vapor’ recovery either.
I wish that were true.
The way I see Obamas retirement is that he will join Sharpton and Jesse Jackson as a race baiting rabble-rouser. Obama enjoys what he does and as an ex-president he will be freerer to do it and will make millions in speaking fees while doing it.
And riding around in a government-funded Land Yacht driven by a government funded driver.
test course will be all downhill tracks, only one time around.
my 2004 Camry with almost 200,000 miles on it just crossed the country and back...averaged 30mph.....smooth riding.....no troubles....can’t beat a Camry...
could be you may have been driving with crap gas - ethanol.
that or idling in traffic a lot less.
The EPA mileage test results published by the car makers have NOT been accurate from the first day they were published.
No, “theres your ten percent” if ethanol contained no energy. It has less than gasoline, but not zero.
