Keep in mind that the jury is/are the representatives of the poeple within the judicial branch.

This was a very new innovation started by the English, that the people should have the final say in the matter.

And in this little insight is one of the real reason for the elite’s and aristocrat’s frustration at times. For a sequestered jury, six people or twelve people speaking as one voice (the unanimous vote), makes their decisions based solely on the evidence and on the law, and can rise above and defy the political wishes of those in power.

All liberties are precious, but I think a strong case could be made that the right to a jury trial is even more important than the right to elect legislators. The jury is the absolute foundation of liberty.
