Nine months after the shooting of Trayvon Martin, a White man has killed another Florida teen under troubling circumstances.
The Orlando Sentinel reports that on Friday night, 17-year-old Jordan Russell Davis and a group of friends were sitting in an SUV in the parking lot of a Jacksonville convenience store when they were approached by another vehicle. Michael David Dunn, who was accompanied by his girlfriend, asked the teens to turn down their music.
According to Lt. Rob Schoonover of the Jacksonville Sherrif's Office, Davis and Dunn exchanged words. Allegedly, the 45-year-old then drew a gun and fired into the SUV eight or nine times, striking the young boy twice. He then drove off, but a witness inside the store wrote down his license plate number.
The following morning, the couple learned that one of the passengers of the car had died via a news report. They then returned home to Brevard County, where Dunn was arrested later that day and charged with murder and attempted murder.
Jordan Russell Davis was a student at Samuel W. Wolfson High School, a magnet school. He worked at the local Wynn Dixie grocery store. Frankly, I would not care if he was a member of Three Six Mafia who had stopped at the convenience store to re-up on blunts and 40 ounces. If a group of people is sitting in a car listening to loud music, it is not the job of a private citizen to demand that they turn it down. Furthermore, there is nothing justifiable or excusable about Dunn drawing a gun on a group of people whom he had accosted.
Michael David Dunn, likely high off the excitement of his son’s wedding, perhaps a few too many gin and tonics at the reception and certainly the feeling one gets from being White, male and armed, felt it was his place to approach these young people aggressively over the volume of their music.
And this gun wielding person, who allegedly APPROACHED THE CAR without provocation (much like George Zimmerman hunted down Trayvon Martin without provocation), felt threatened by the presence of teenagers in a car with whom he started an argument because HE THOUGHT THEIR MUSIC WAS TOO LOUD.
White privilege is just so, so real.
Dunn’s daughter has come forward to defend her father as “a good person.” While we all make mistakes, I’m inclined to say that picking an argument with a car full of teenagers and then shooting into the vehicle is the first step a “good person” makes off of the path of righteousness. I’m inclined to assume that the gun collector wasn’t a big fan of young Black men and had probably done other non-“good person” things before.
The shooter’s lawyer, Robin Lemonidis, originally stated that her client was not guilty and had acted responsibly, adding that the full story had not yet been made public. A report late Tuesday night included claims that Dunn had “seen a gun.” While he certainly is entitled to his day in court…why was the gun claim not made until two days after he was arrested? Why didn’t he turn himself in if he felt he’d done nothing wrong? Where was the “good person” his daughter swears he is then?
Dunn harassed a car full of young people, shot into the car and drove away. Upon learning that someone had died, he fled town and waited for the police to come find him. The only bit of hope here is that there was a car full of witnesses, in addition to the people in and around the store who saw the incident.
Alas, in a country that is dealing with increased racial tensions and the insane paranoia of White men who seem to feel that their country has been stolen by a burgeoning ‘minority’ population and a Black president who won the popular vote, it seems inevitable that we will hear more stories like this. And as a community that has been ravaged by not only external abuse, but our own inability to get any sort of handle on our issues with Black-on-Black violence, one cant help but to feel like we are stuck in a sense of perpetual outrage, grief and trauma.
And so Jordan joins Trayvon as one of many, many Black boys and girls to be felled by senseless violence. Death by White hands, death by Black ones…one thing seems to remain constant: our lives simply do not matter enough to be protected. We march, we pray, we cry and still, we die for no reason.
When does it end?
I have no idea what happened, so can’t make any sort of judgement. But since when are 17 year old teenagers described as “young boys.”
This article uses the term “young boy” to describe the 17 year old....and how many times did I hear Trayon Martin described as a child.
Somewhat different scenario than the other circus. But Davis clearly should not have escalated the situation. If he felt uncomfortable about he or his girlfriend going into the market, he should have just left. If he’s stewed to the gills, whose problem is that?

First off, there's a difference between "assault" and shooting someone.
Secondly, some people deserve a right hand for running their mouth. I stand by my posts in that thread.
If they are in the SUV and remain in the SUV, they are not menacing, they are mouthing off.
It’s tempting, but never okay to shoot teens for mouthing off.

How far they got, and how quickly they returned to the crime scene, AND what they did in the interim are what is not proven at this point.
I simply cannot help but wonder if this isn’t a “let’s get our stories straight” drug deal gone bad.

He was scared for his life.
The teens in the SUV threatened to kill Dunn and used bad language.
He saw a shotgun.
Dunn was scared to be in Jacksonville and left the scene to protect himself, his girlfriend and to eat pizza and had to go back home to be with his dog and family.
Christian and Newsom disappeared Jan. 6, 2007, from the Washington Ridge apartment complex where Christian’s best friend lived.
Hours later, Newsom’s body was found alongside railroad tracks near Chipman Street in East Knoxville. He had been raped with an object and then shot three times. The final shot was delivered execution style.
He had been gagged with a sock stuffed in his mouth. His ankles were bound with his own belt. His hands were secured behind his back. His face was wrapped in a bandanna. His head was covered with a sweatshirt tied around his neck with shoestrings.
Forensic evidence showed that he had been raped in the final hours of his life. He was forced to walk barefoot to the railroad tracks that ran parallel to Chipman Street and shot in the neck and back. As Newsom lay paralyzed on the ground, the muzzle of a .22-caliber gun was placed against his covered head and fired. His body would later be wrapped up in a comforter, doused in gasoline and set afire.
Christian, meanwhile, was tied up inside the Chipman Street house of Davidson, a stranger to her. She was repeatedly raped orally, vaginally and rectally. At some point, she was savagely attacked in her genital region, either kicked or beaten with an object.
She suffered two blows to the head and was dragged into the carpeted living room of Davidson’s Chipman Street home. Bleach was sprayed down her throat, an apparent effort to destroy DNA evidence.
She was hogtied with strips of fabric from a bedding set. Still alive, her body was encased in black garbage bags and her head wrapped in a white plastic grocery bag. I live in the small city of Rome, NY. Homicides are very rare here. On June 4th of this year, we had a double homicide several blocks down from where I live. A 23 year old white girl was stabbed to death by her black ex-boyfriend. According to news articles, they had a 1 year old child together.
They had apparently split after several arguments, and also because the ex-boyfriend had previously beaten her up. In the early morning hours of June 3rd, he had shown up at her apartment, begging to stay because he didn't have any place else to go. The doors were locked at that time, and they refused him entry. The cops were called because he was refusing to leave. He left after the cops arrived, but no charges were filed because they said no laws were broken, and no threats were made. Rome Police say that the perp was known to them for other offenses, but none that were of a violent nature. It should also be noted that the ex-boyfriends address was given as Schenectady, NY, which is approximately 90 miles east of Rome. According to court records, the ex-boyfriend had secretly put an app on the girl's cellphone so he could read all the text messages she was sending and receiving. He was trying to find out if she was having sex with anyone else.
The girl worked at the nursing home near me. She had worked a double-shift overnight, and her roommate had watched the child while she was working. The roommate's boyfriend also stayed overnight because he didn't want her staying alone, especially in light of the ex-boyfriend having showed up the day before.
The girl had just gotten home when she was attacked, around 6:15 a.m. When she went to enter her home, the perp repeatedly stabbed her. She had 13 stab wounds to her neck and torso. She died at the scene.
Her roommate, and the roommate's boyfriend were upstairs in a bedroom when they heard the girl screaming. The roommate's boyfriend attempted to pull the perp off the girl, but he was also stabbed several times, and died at the hospital. The perp tried to cut his own throat, but didn't do a good enough job. He fled the scene, but was later found hiding in a vehicle approximately 5 hours later. He's been charged with 1st and 2nd degree murder, and the case is headed to the Grand Jury. He plead "not guilty" at his arraignment.

He thought they may have . He initially thought they were singing along to their music. And, in any event, verbal threats and "bad language" do not give you the right to use deadly force.
He saw a shotgun.
He thought he saw something, and thought it may have been a shotgun. No weapons were found in the SUV.

Contrast with Zimmerman, who had the cops called to the scene, and calmly explained what happened almost immediately after it did. This guy ran. This guy ran because, he says, he was scared to stay there, he needed to find someone to care for his dogs, and he wanted to call the cops in his home area, rather than create a mess in Jacksonville. That's b*llshit, pardon my language. This guy ran, and NEVER CALLED THE COPS. He was only tracked down because someone wrote down his license plate number.
You’d think this story would supercede St. Skittles. Is it a big stor in FL, or is there some reason the MSM is not howling it from the rooftops?
