Japan Ready to Declare: We’ll Go First

Japan has no intention to go it alone in defending its territory or national interests from growing threats in the Asia-Pacific region. But an annual defense review released Tuesday and other recent developments signal an increasing willingness on the part of Japan to go it alone, first.

Japan plans to establish a new National Security Council that would streamline how and when Tokyo would use military force, appoint a senior officer to command troops from all three armed services, and formally designate a Marine Corps-like force to defend its vulnerable southwest islands.

The United States remains Japan’s essential security partner, and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has vowed to strengthen the U.S.-Japan defense alliance. But the new plans would allow Japan to respond to threats against its own territory without turning first to its long-time protector.

The annual Defense White Paper issued by the Ministry of Defense concludes that Japan faces “increasingly tangible, acute and serious” threats from its neighbors – meaning, China mostly — and must improve its ability to respond militarily, should that be necessary.

“The reality of the current international community suggests that it is not necessarily possible to prevent invasions from the outside by only nonmilitary means such as diplomatic efforts, and in the event that the nation were to be invaded it would not be able to remove such a threat…. For this reason, Japan is striving to develop proper defense capabilities to protect the lives and assets of the public and to defend the territorial land, sea and airspace of Japan,” the report says.

I’ll be impressed when they increase their military budget. The current 1% of GDP number is half the Chinese %.

We should give all our non nuclear carries to Japan to overhaul and operate.

At this point I’m just fine with them building a couple carriers (can license build the RN’s QE class, like they did with their early dreadnought battleships).

It is obvious that the Japanese can no longer depend on the US. This is more of Obama leading from behind.

I think right now the only US carrier that's held as a reserve asset is the Kitty Hawk. Maybe Constellation, but I recall reading that she'd been struck. All the others have been struck, with all of them except Kennedy (held for museum donation) and possibly Ranger (also held for museum donation - but I'd read that the SEALS removed her screws using plastic explosives as part of a training exercise some years ago) and Independence (retired in good condition, apparently) in pretty advanced states of decay. One (America) has been sink-exed.

The US runs its carriers into the ground. I mean, we get good life and great value out of them, but the costs of operating them after ~50 years of service is exorbitant. In addition to how the conventionals were late 1940s/1950s designs without a lot of consideration given to manpower requirements (like is happening with the Ford class).

Building new would give the Japanese fresh ships with 50 year lifespans built to more economical manning standards. Going with the QE class would limit the need for them to reinvent the wheel with an indigenous design.

I haven't forgiven the Nippers for their atrocities against our troops (and their entire region) seven decades ago. Phock 'em all, and the ghosts of their "honorable ancestors".

A nation of butchers.

Japan builds Aegis destroyers based on US blueprints. They’re not ABS standard, but are essentially the same as US Navy ships.

The subtext of this article is the increasing unreliability of the United States as an ally, and the complete all-fronts disaster that is US foreign policy under Obama.

Japan has already laid down one carrier with a displacement of almost 30,000 tons, with plans for another two.

Sounds to me like a thinly veiled warning that they have or are preparing to go nuclear capable on a moments notice, although that probably isn't unexpected as I'm sure they could have them in practically no time if they so desired.

Not only that, but I'm sure they've other “interesting” technologies that they're probably ready to prepare for fielding on short notice if China starts becoming significantly provocative. They're well aware that the left in this country will let China do as they please in that theater and are simply preparing to HAVE to go it alone.
