Japan has no intention to go it alone in defending its territory or national interests from growing threats in the Asia-Pacific region. But an annual defense review released Tuesday and other recent developments signal an increasing willingness on the part of Japan to go it alone, first.
Japan plans to establish a new National Security Council that would streamline how and when Tokyo would use military force, appoint a senior officer to command troops from all three armed services, and formally designate a Marine Corps-like force to defend its vulnerable southwest islands.
The United States remains Japans essential security partner, and Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has vowed to strengthen the U.S.-Japan defense alliance. But the new plans would allow Japan to respond to threats against its own territory without turning first to its long-time protector.
The annual Defense White Paper issued by the Ministry of Defense concludes that Japan faces increasingly tangible, acute and serious threats from its neighbors meaning, China mostly and must improve its ability to respond militarily, should that be necessary.
The reality of the current international community suggests that it is not necessarily possible to prevent invasions from the outside by only nonmilitary means such as diplomatic efforts, and in the event that the nation were to be invaded it would not be able to remove such a threat
. For this reason, Japan is striving to develop proper defense capabilities to protect the lives and assets of the public and to defend the territorial land, sea and airspace of Japan, the report says.

“what civilized country would have kiddie porn be legal?”
Well, ours, for one. We have legalized sexually deviants, known as homosexuals, as persons in authority over children, from school teachers, to cops, to judges, to priests, to Boy Scout and Girl Scout leaders, and God forbid, even as homosexual couples as adoptive parents.
That’s right. We have allowed child predators to take on legally protected status over our children.
Ever heard of NAMBLA a** ?
A voice of reason .
i thought all the ones we currently operate are all nuclear. From Enterprise (65) and all the Nimitz’s are all nuclear. If we have any non nuclear it may be not be worth trying to overhaul them if they’ve been mothballed for such a long time and will need so much upgrading.
Ummm, they’ve actually already gone nuclear. We’re in the fallout path.
Thank you. We’ve got to stop trying to change the world and fix our own. I couldn’t care less about Japan, not that I don’t like them or wish them any harm, I just do not care. Our country needs far more help than the others.
Same in Japan. Girls learn that child prostitution is a good way to earn “pocket money” and that “love motels” and cafes will hold the Johns money to ensure payment.
Little to no stigma attacher any more.
Very sad.
You know how Hollyweird throws gays and sluts into every TV show. It is hard to find Japanese anime without at least one child character obsessed with porn or sex - even kindergarten aged characters. Its influence has made this all seem perfecly normal for the children in that country.
All over Tokyo are U-15 shops where you can buy mags and videos of skimpy-clothed girls posing and simulating... inthongs and whatnot. These girls can be 8 for crying out loud. Parents are putting these girls on the doorstep of porn careers and sometimes both since child porn is legal to possess in Tokyo and Nagano.
Sexual-shaped ice cream and candy - pillows with genitals attached - lingerie for preteens - Hello Kitty sex toys - etcetc all there for the children to buy at the mall.
I think the age of consent is something like 12 - not that anyone cares. Also note that anal and oral are not classified as sex and you get an idea of what they are paying to do.
and people why Japanese arent having enough kids?
Who would want a child in such a messed up place? (like San Fran with more pervs)
NAMBLA is still illegal and underground
It doesn’t take many. Never has. Most soldiers in any age are burdens and canon fodder. Conscript forces differ greatly in quality from professional standards. Ours did in WWII, Korea, Nam....vs Iraq I, II and Afghanistan.
“Out of every ONE HUNDRED men, TEN should not be there, EIGHTY are nothing but targets, NINE are the real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they the battle make.”
“Ah, but the ONE, ONE of them is a WARRIOR, and he will bring the others back.” Heraclitus 500 BC also attributed to Xenophon....never can find the original citation.
Regardless, from the classic Greeks...a nation of warriors if ever there was one.
My uncle Carl had a more appropriate if less scholarly quote....he was in China Burma theater (WWII) and then Korea....said he would rather fight 10 Chinamen than one Jap...and that is exactly how the red bastards work it.”
Modern China on offense vs modern Japan on defense.
It would be an interesting test of power as James T. Kirk would say. I would stay out of it for the first few rounds and come in for the victory dance myself. It will be long, harsh and bloody.
To protect it’s interests, Japan doesn’t need aircraft carriers....it is one. It will need lots of planes, subs, littoral combat ships, and assault landing ships to take back the islands China will seize by surprise and concentration of force.
I do not see either as a good guy
On July 5th, we have the annual Anime Expo here at the LA Convention center which always happens every 4th of July weekend. Biggest anime convention in North America.
One of the biggest things here in America is the fansubbing of up-to-date, by the hour of original anime coming from Japan. It is said that fansubbers take away from the American licensers of the anime, but it actually helps sales of the DVD’s eventually. I recommend Claymore :)
On a funny note:

Okay.
Just to clarify: I did not use the word “good” to describe either entity.
I did, however, use the word “ally” to apply to Japan (but not to China).
The JFK is still sitting here at Philly...
True, they have even more serious personnel problems than we do. They should start from scratch on a design. As I recall, their shipbuilding capabilities were pretty good...:). And I’ve read that the military equipment that they build for themselves (and cannot sell on the world market) is absolutely first-class.
So before you run your mouth you might want to do some research.
Those are hulks, not ships. What would the Japanese do with them?
Are you also planning on donating the Naval Air Museum, so that they’ll have an air wing?
Those platforms can be reconditioned.
Japanese work together and rebuild quickly. Japan doesn’t have to occupy China, just take out a few major infrastructure targets and China goes back 100 years within a month and stays there.
You might think so, and I'm not saying its impossible, but the reality is 'not really'.
Of those ships shown, the Kitty Hawk might have 5 more years max on it. I got a few traps on the Shi##y Kitty (as everyone called it then), over 20 years ago, before they decommed it.
Metal fatique is a very serious issue. From the keels to the engines, they are worn out, like a piece of wire that's has been bent too many times. You can't fix that, you can only commit to a never ending series of very complicated and expensive repairs. Imagine renovating a house that has termite eaten wall studs, floor joists, and roof beams. The interior is great, but you have to remove it all to get to the frame. How do you replace the structure without tearing apart everthing? In the end, you would have been better off building new.
Its not the years, its the miles. The BB-61 class ships were mothballed when they were almost new. They really did have a lot of life left, so taking them out of the ready reserve wasn't such an obstacle.
Bringing those CVs back to life would require nearly as much time as building a new one and within 10 years you would be upside down on the cost as well. It would only get worse from there.
The Japanese built brand new aircraft carriers of approximately the same tonnage as the Kitty Hawk 70 years ago. Should they desire to build them again, they will. Now, just as we have passed the plans for AEGIS to the Japanese, we could also pass the plans for a CVN, which they could readily build from the keel up.
