If you watched the trial, Olivia Bertalan, a neighbor, testified that 6 months before the shooting she was the victim of a home invasion. She testified how she had knelt in a closet terrified, as the invaders stole her belongings. She told the court about George coming to her home after the police left and gave her his number, his wife's number and told her to call them for anything. I believe he even gave her a lock for her door to help keep her more secure. Zimmerman wasn't the average neighborhood watch guy and his neighborhood wasn't your average neighborhood; it was a complex under attack and he was a caring and compassionate neighbor.
I would consider myself lucky to have George Zimmerman in my neighborhood because I know he wouldn't just wait in his car, he'd do everything he could to help me.
GZ did not witness a crime taking place. He saw Martin acting “suspiciously”. If any of my neighbors saw a crime taking place, especially a home invasion, I would expect a lot of guns and people to appear very shortly. This is different from somebody looking “suspicious”. GZ may be a fine man, but getting out of the car in this situation was not necessary and caused him a lot of problems. I hope that he is acquitted and never has got through that experience again.
