Perhaps the grand jury would be enough, but I still think we shouldn’t just willy-nilly accept a self-defense claim just because someone says so.

Well, of course. But it depends on the evidence, doesn't it? Investigations need to follow the evidence. If there is no evidence to convict...

Of course it depends on the evidence. That’s why I advocate a hearing of some sort where it is diligently presented. Self-defense claims, in particular, would be a kind that might appear to provide an avenue to murder for an unscrupulous person. So, the evidence must be systematically investigated and presented at a formal hearing in any self-defense claim.
