Carla Cheney, a former Walmart employee from Kemptville, Canada, claims she was fired for alerting a customer that he shouldn't leave his dog in a hot car.
On Wednesday, shortly before beginning her shift, Cheney saw the customer put his Newfoundland—a large breed with a heavy black coat—in his truck and roll up the windows, reports the Ottawa Citizen. Cheney, who worked in the Walmart pharmacy, called the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) and later confronted the dog owner after he left the store, telling him that "he should not be leaving his dog in the car." He responded that it was none of her business.
Later that day, Cheney was called into her the office of her manager... The manager then told her she was fired...
Some estimates put the number of dogs that die each year from being left in a hot car in the thousands.
The Chicago Tribune reports that on an 85-degree day, the dashboard can heat up to 170 degrees in a mere 15 minutes.

No one is stupid enough to think it’s safe to leave a dog in a hot car like that.
Judging by some of the comments on this thread, I’d have to disagree with that...sadly.
I’m with you. Living in the deep south there’s no excuse and no reason to have one’s dog(s) sitting in the car while errands are run. Leave them at home. They are safe and cool there and will be waiting for family’s return! Hoping that poor GSD survived. People are just selfish and stupid. Why try to “negotiate” temperature? Just leave the animals at home when you can’t take them with you! Good grief!!
The GSD survived just fine.
I don’t know, however, what happened to the *owner*, whether the cops arrested him later or what.
I made sure the dog was taken care of.
If she saw this man put the dog in, why didn’t she ask him if he would be out soon or hope he doesn’t leave the dog long, right then?
Immediately calling authorities - tattling - is a good way to piss off people right away. In any case, you can watch the dog, or if you know the person say something first, or find someone to do so. Not good form to bring in the big guns right away. Be brave and talk to the person first, give them a chance to correct themselves rather than giving them a record. This is not a robbery.
Not to say that she had to be fired, or that her intentions weren’t good.
Agreed. Indeed, I tried many times when I lived in apartments to request modified behavior from other tenants rather than complaining to the landlord or local SPCA. I was very patient. In fact, with 1 irritating neighbor I never did tell the landlord.
How is that negative contact.
The manager never had contact with the shoplifter at all.

I can’t imagine coming out of a store to find my car window smashed, my dog gone and the driver’s side covered in blood.
Hope they freaked out enough to learn a lesson.
