New York City police told to quit proactive policing, be wary of lawsuits

New York City Police are being told by their union to quit responding to calls for crimes that aren’t occurring right in front of them, as new laws passed by the City Council open the doors for more discrimination suits.

The New York Police Department Patrolman's Benevolent Association sent a letter to members this week, advising them not to react to “events not occurring in the officer’s presence … [that could] subject the officer to legal action,” the Daily Mail reported.

One of the new laws established an independent inspector general to oversee the police and ensure compliant with laws against discrimination. The second law that just passed creates a smoother, more streamlined process for individuals to sue the department for racial profiling — and it’s this law that’s causing police the most confusion.

Mentioning the race of a suspect as part of the description can lead to a lawsuit. Soon they won’t be able to mention the gender.

Hmm... I wonder what Law & Order episodes will look like. Just a bunch of “detectives” sitting around the bull pen talking about politics?

“Mentioning the race of a suspect as part of the description can lead to a lawsuit. “

What about giving each cop a color chart. They can hold it up to the perp’s face and say, “He’s a 19. Possibly 19.5.”

I agree. Sounds more like a quota system - for every black you arrest, you need a ‘crappy *ss cracker’ arrest.

Build a secret wood chipper that is self contained and self cleaning.

Instant Star Chamber.

Wonder how Bratton feels about that.

Guesses on who will be called in a few years from now to clean up the mess.

Well “Protect” has been out for years, now apparently “Serve” is out the window. What will the Police motto be? “ We’ll be around when it’s over, maybe”?

How could they possibly know the gender without asking the suspect how he/she/it identifies?

I don’t think this is going to turn out to well.

Not that New York deserves anything better.

New York City police told to quit proactive policing,...

Aren't they all needed to guard and wait on Bloomberg, anyway?

Nah, it'll be: "Just the code enforcement revenue, mam, just the code enforcement revenue."

If it wasn’t all blacks being shot by blacks before, it will be now. Every white man, cop or civilian, that shoots a black man will be charged with a crime no matter what the circumstances. In fact, a new law will be passed saying whites can NEVER use force against a black. They’ll call it the “Justice for Trayvon Law”.

Deny you access to a weapon of your own AND at the same time cripple the 911 system.

Perfect!

Fine.

Now if we could get them to do the same thing about those "Click It Or Ticket" and DWI checkpoints and quit laying those speed traps and staking out stop signs in quiet residential neighborhoods, we will all be better off.
