There should be no political ‘careers’.

How come our founders didn't foresee this problem and initiate term limits?

Don’t know, but I suspect it’s at least partially because all of them had real jobs (e.g. farmers etc.) and didn’t think of public office as something anyone would aspire to as a lifetime occupation. They also didn’t likely see the expansive array of perks that now come with these jobs.

They did see it and realized term limits are not the answer. Ben Franklin “A republic if you can keep it”, Thomas Jefferson “The government you elect is government you deserve.”
They knew that when the people stopped paying attention to the quality of their leaders the republic is lost and no Band-Aids will help.

They did for the most part.
The 17th amendment circumvented their original design and the combination of the welfare state and universal suffrage created a permanent underclass vote farm.

We destroyed their vision and and system yet we blame them for our mistakes.
