One of the things I do well is 'see patterns'. Boyfriend murdered, turns into lawyer , or TV Anti-crime advocate, or LEO.
The pattern is... most of the time it turns out they murdered their boyfriend and got away with it. This leads them into a profession where they can fanatically pursue other's sins, so they can forget their own.
Somehow they rationalize that keeping others from getting away with murder helps atone for the fact that they got away with it. I may be completely wrong, but... it 's something to think about.
