Rand Paul mocks Rick Perry over debate flub
The Hill ^ | July 9, 2013 | Justin Sink

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.), who has hinted he could mount a 2016 presidential bid, is already taking shots at his potential competition in the Republican primary.

The freshman senator was asked Monday night during an appearance on Fox News about Texas Gov. Rick Perry's (R) announcement he would not seek reelection — a move that has prompted speculation that Perry could again run for the White House.

“If Gov. Perry decides to run for president, I think there would be three good reasons why he could be president: Texas is a big successful state, he’s a long term governor and … I can’t remember the other one,” Paul quipped.

The joke was a reference to Perry's disastrous performance in a November 2011 GOP presidential debate, in which he was unable to remember the third federal agency he wanted to eliminate.

"Commerce, Education and the — what's the third one there? Let's see," Perry said at the time.

Perry later acknowledged the gaffe — telling CBS News that he "stepped in it" — but his campaign was never able to recover. He later endorsed Newt Gingrich for the Republican nomination ahead of the South Carolina primary.

Am I the only one seeing the irony of Rand Paul making fun of another politician, when your father is a Laurel and Hardy joke?

I think this is a below the belt remark, we don’t mean to be to prudish. We need to be able to take some humorous remarks but I think this is in bad taste.

I don’t like Paul-Bots, I don’t think they follow Ron Paul, I don’t think the Libertarian Platform follows Ron Paul. As for Ron Paul ideals? States Rights? Audit the Fed? Which is now Audit the IRS? Those aren’t so bad. Non-Interventionism? I’m with Pat Buchanan on that issue.

Santorum was doing it all ‘for the team’ - his MO. You didn’t figure that out yet? He wasn’t in it to win it - but to be romney’s ‘straight man’ - protector of him against NEWT. Santorum is a flip flopper - he speaks and unable to walk the talk. Something ‘the sweater crowd’ refused to see - so I’ll give him an ‘A’ for acting.

Perry or Gingrich couldn’t overtake Santorum. That’s their fault if they could not defeat Santorum in La, Ms, Al, Mo, Ok, Neb, Colo, Iowa, North Dakota.

Sure, Santorum was a team player doing it for Romney.

Romney may have been politically expedient in Mass, he ran pro-life 2 times. There are Doctors who performed abortions who became pro-life. I have no doubt that Romney-Ryan would have defunded planned parenthood as has been done in 10 states in the US and that Republicans have been pushing and will be done if they ever get some significant control.

Face it, Newt couldn’t win with his baggage, I like him, Perry should have done better, can’t blame it all on the elite.

Cheap shot.

Yes, it seems like a bit of "daddy" peeking out in Rand's personality, IMO. Disappointing.

Reagan suffered some setbacks during his first non-successful run for the presidency. I think Perry can overcome the gaffes and he was my choice in 2012. I like him, and yes - he isn’t perfect, but he has been a good governor.

Newt couldn’t win with his baggage,

Not strange how you speak of his 'baggage' and NOT of the baggage of Romney and Santorum, the GOP's butt boy. You picked that 'baggage line' from romney coherts behind the scenes that was spread throughout the internet - nothing original about you, just easily led.

Romney may have been politically expedient in Mass, he ran pro-life 2 times.

Governor ONE TIME and managed to be the first governor/first state to institute the law to marry the same sex. Romneycare has abortion it it and cheap too, $50! - the template for obamacare. So don't tell me how he ran! He's a LIAR from the get go. He also claims to be 'severely conservative' - what an *ss! Yet, some fell for his rant. Unbelievable!

And NEWT couldn't win because low info voters were living in fear and believed the LIAR ROMNEY. He won through LIES with the help of drudge - he had NOTHING to offer American and NEVER DID. He was counting on low info voters like you! And Santorum was 'his protector' against NEWT as he got the 'conservatives' who could be conned.

Conservatives, nonetheless, stuck with NEWT until he withdrew. So enjoy the next primary for they know you guys are so scattered since you stand for NOTHING!

No conservative will run - someone just needs to say they are because they know the fearful and low info voters don't scrutinize a candidates background and can't be bothered because they want to win!! Crap, even someone who never won any election was in the mix - and one only won 'once' but his money and promises helped him win that! His dirty deeds was done, so evil #2 was onto America to ensure evil#1 stays in power and he had his butt boys to help. It's done and over with - you were used and STILL don't 'get it'.

The election process of '12 proved that the dumbing down of Americans is complete...for those who can be dumbed down.

Perry should have done better, can’t blame it all on the elite.

WOW. You really are clueless even 8 months after.

Cheap shot.

Oh stop protecting the liberal. It is very factual. Did he not know what 3rd Department he wanted to close or not? That is the question. Why are you so protective of a Liberal Republican for? He does not deserve it. Perry wants the country full of illegal aliens.....do you??????

It is customary for the current governor of Texas to speak to La Raza and other groups. Don’t post that as an argument against Gov. Perry.

You have got to be kidding. So if it was customary for the Governor of Texas to speak at Planned Parenthood, you would give him a pass for that too. Where are Perry’s principles? Obviously has has ZERO!!!!!! Don’t worry about it though, Rick Perry will NEVER be President of the United States and I can say that with 100 percent assurance.

Right now Texas is looking a whole lot better than the rest of the country. Name someone besides Cruz (who I also like) who will protect the right to life, your Second Amendment rights, freedom of religion and stands by traditional marriage. You call that a liberal?

What a bunch of crap. Not surprising coming from you. You are the biggest liberal on the site. You constantly bash the Christian Conservatives. Oh well...Newt would have lost worse than Romney. Santorum would have won but you hated him so much that you desired Obama more. Sad!!! Oh your lover Rick Perry will never be President.

Bachmann! Santorum! Those are the best of the best we have. I know that some of you want a more center candidate but I want a stanch conservative this time. We have had enough center candidates. Let’s give a conservative a chance. yes Cruz would be good, but we don’t know how he would do with debates. Bachmann and Santorum are seasoned debaters and won’t make silly mistakes not that Cruz will, but we don’t know for sure.

Millions of times, but I am not running for the most important position of the World especially during a debate for their lives. If he had done this as President, it actually would not have been so bad because someone could have passed him a piece of paper or it would have been on the teleprompter, but during a debate.....I think it was the first debate too.

Bachmann had her shot. Santorum is a good and decent man. He went pretty far in the last round and I could definitely support him.

I’m a Rick Perry fan and I didn’t see it as a cheap shot, hell Rick Perry laughed at that one. You have to be able to laugh at yourself.

" that would include a multi-year process of granting visas to undocumented workers that would hinge on the annual verification of the security of the U.S.-Mexico border."

No citizenship, no amnesty, dependent upon border security. That sounds like a conservative solution to me.

So the folks who broke the law by entering our country illegally and who have continued to break the law by staying and working will be granted visas and allowed to stay in the country? That's amnesty by definition:

"the act of an authority (as a government) by which pardon is granted to a large group of individuals"

Pardon: "the excusing of an offense without exacting a penalty"
