At least you remembered the state, I can’t keep it all to memory. I think Michigan but not sure. There was a rash of crimes of black on white at the time. And I’m sure there are many more not making it into print. There was a white girl playing soccer - the opposing team had a black girl and she hurt the white girl claiming she was tripped by her. There was a video here on it/the game.
