Country singer Randy Travis has been admitted to a Texas hospital and is listed in critical condition, according to his public relations firm.
The six-time Grammy winner is suffering from complications of recently acquired viral cardiomyopathy.
"Cardiomyopathy is the term for any disease of the heart muscle that interferes with the heart’s ability to pump blood with sufficient force," according to Johns Hopkins Medicine. Travis' condition, which is viral, was caused by an infection in the heart.
Travis, 54, was admitted to the hospital on Sunday.
The illness is a continuation of a tough run for the "Three Wooden Crosses" singer after a handful of recent high-profile appearances, including a performance during the Country Music Association Festival's nightly concert series.
Travis had also performed at the memorial service for slain ex-Navy SEAL Chris Kyle in February.
Travis pleaded guilty to driving while intoxicated in January following his arrest last year when he was found naked after crashing his Pontiac Trans Am.
Travis was sentenced to two years of probation, fined $2000 and given a 180-day suspended jail sentence. He was required to spend at least 30 days at an alcohol treatment facility and complete 100 hours of community service.
In August 2012, he was cited after a dustup at a church in the parking lot of Prestonwood Baptist Church.
In November, Travis said through his attorney that he had put together a personal program to get sober. He had also returned to the recording studio.
They state Travis’ cardiomyopathy is from a viral infection, which by itself can lead to heart failure. There is also a kind of cardiomyopathy caused by alcoholism-— he definitely is an alcoholic. The two together really damage heart muscle and the result is poor circulation, poor kidney clearance of toxins and fluids, buildup of fluid in the lungs and low blood oxygen. Drowning in his own fluids, and can’t get a breath. Pray for him.

I remember the first time I heard Randy, I thought I was listening to Merle Haggard, and it took me a while after that to recognize that he wasn’t merely imitating Haggard.
His run was too short.

Happened to a guy I used to work with.
He was in his early 30’s, sitting at a Blackjack Table (feeling awful) at a Lake Tahoe Casino when the Dealer told him he was turning green. He thought he had the Flu.
They called an Ambulance and he was having what they thought was a Heart Attack. They traced it to a Viral Infection and he ended up losing about a third of his Heart function. Very sad situation, but he survived it.
No he had a viral infection of the heart and like Randy liked to abuse the booze. That is some serious stuff, it’s not like an infection of the arm or leg muscle, there’s only one heart and even if a person beat the infection, the damage is there forever. Bob Dylan also had it but it in the sac surrounding the heart. I guess there from boozing so much weaken their immune system.

The low bp that results causes a loop of hormone reactions that will cause the heart rate to go up to compensate for the lower blood/oxygen flow to critical areas— like the brain. The result of this increased heart rate is that the heart muscle, initially starved for oxygen will continue to wear itself out compensating. It is a vicious cascade of natural events that leads to death without intervention. You can't replace damaged heart muscle and get it back up to full function— you can only try to assist the body with agents to reduce the amount of stress on the organs from this, and reduce the amount of fluids that build up.

Hey, thank you for this information. I have a friend (woman) that has been almost 3 years sober having problems like this with low blood pressure. Then it will shoot up at times.
She had been drinking since she was about 12-13 years old and stopped at 40.
Had to have been some damage done in all that time especially the developing years of adolescence.
Perhaps you would be happier commenting on another thread.
