When people habituate themselves to the wholesale and unconditional idolatry of thugs... it's hard to sympathize with them when they are betrayed.
It's why (until NOW) the American system has been SUCH a humanitarian and political success.
We have (had) built into the system so many techniques, methods and catches to preclude a mere lionized thug coming to power. It was designed to prevent possibly ‘uninformed voters’ from reverting to type and placing the loudest, most unscrupulous, most smarmy and patronizing criminal in the WH JUST because he's popular!
Those was the good old days!
