Mr. Shelby is a RINO. He switched from a Senate Democrat to Senate RINO some time in 1994, when Alabama was moving from Commy Dem to Republican
And as a democrat he ran a particularly nasty campaign against a true hero, former POW Jeremiah Denton. I still haven’t forgiven him for that.
Well, yeah, I remember. ;-) And many a democrat in Alabama has switched over to the Republicans in my lifetime. When I was a boy EVERYONE was a democrat. Now, no one is, except Blacks. Since blacks make up about 26% of the population of Alabama, the democrats are now forever in the minority here.
Still, the old-time democrats were and are conservatives, first and foremost. That is why I’ve always supported their conversion.
When Shelby switched, I supported him, too, thinking he was simply being true to his conservative roots.
Now I’m not so sure.
Don’t know about Sen. Shelby...he’s had some good votes and some bad ones. However, I DO know that the entire state of Texas was once Democrats. There were almost no Republicans. Once Texans began to say, hey, the Democrats left me, I didn’t leave them - just like Ronald Reagan said - then millions of Texans who were once Dems or whose parents/grands etc were Dems, became Republicans.
To use your tortured “logic”, every modern-day Texas Republican is a RINO because their state’s history was with the Democrat party.
