Dear Author,
The Federal troops did not squash the attempt - they quashed the attempt.
Slight pet peeve about those two words.

Yes, its a hopeless campaign, because they could care less!
How much less could they care?
If they could care less, does that imply they care some?

The courtesy and respect shown by General Ulysses S. Grant and his men to General Robert E. Lee and his weary men at the surrender and Lincolns wish for a peaceful re-uniting of the North and South would be short lived. I'm thinking that reunited should be a single word, and short-lived should be hyphenated.

There is (or was) a Surrattsville. I almost attended the high school there, but wound up going to Oxon Hill. Prince Georges county has gone down hill on a rocket-sled.

Interesting. I have been reading Washington Irving and
at the time they did not say splashed but plashed.
Not that that is the same thing, just curious.

The Federal troops did not squash the attempt - they quashed the attempt.Hmmm. When I was a kid back in Oklahoma, we used to "squish" bugs that attracted our attention for some reason or other. That usually connoted a somewhat juicy end for the unfortunate bugs in question.
Now, I grow squash in my backyard garden (true). I squish bugs that try to make meals of my efforts, thereby quashing their attempts to despoil my squash.

Mary Surrat was most certainly guilty and complicit.
