I'm not a lawyer but I think that,at least in some states,a judge has the power to strike down or overrule a jury's *guilty* verdict but not a "not guilty" verdict.

IANAL, but I believe a judge can set aside a guilty verdict if it is clear that the evidence does not support such a verdict. I don't believe they can set aside an acquittal unless they can prove malfeasance by the jury.
