MANAGUA, Nicaragua The presidents of Nicaragua and Venezuela offered Friday to grant asylum to NSA leaker Edward Snowden, one day after leftist South American leaders gathered to denounce the rerouting of Bolivian President Evo Morales plane over Europe amid reports that the American was aboard.
Daniel Ortega of Nicaragua and Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela made their offers during separate speeches in their home countries Friday afternoon. Snowden has asked for asylum in numerous countries, including Nicaragua and Venezuela.
As head of state, the government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela decided to offer humanitarian asylum to the young American Edward Snowden so that he can live in the homeland of independence leader Simon Bolivar and the late President Hugo Chavez without persecution from the empire, Maduro said, referring to the United States.
He made the offer during a speech marking the anniversary of Venezuelas independence. It was not immediately clear if there were any conditions to Venezuelas offer.
Maduro added that several other Latin American governments have also expressed their intention of taking a similar stance by offering asylum for the cause of dignity.
In Nicaragua, Ortega said he was willing to make the same offer if circumstances allow it. Ortega didnt say what the right circumstances would be when he spoke during a speech in Managua.
He said the Nicaraguan embassy in Moscow received Snowdens application for asylum and that it is studying the request.
We have the sovereign right to help a person who felt remorse after finding out how the United States was using technology to spy on the whole world, and especially its European allies, Ortega said.
The offers came following a flap about the rerouting of Bolivian President Evo Morales plane in Europe earlier this week. . .

Welcome Comrade....
Who else will they take?
I’m just curious, what is this clown going to do for a living once his propaganda value is gone. He has no marketable skills other than his willingness to turn on his benefactors.
This is comical. If Snowden really has information that threatens the security of the United States and he has spent the last two weeks casually adjusting his travel itinerary, you really have to wonder about the abilities of US security operatives.
Too many eyes on him to take a sniper shot in enemy territory ...
I think I’d prefer jail
There could be some back channel bargaining going on between Washington and Moscow. Bend-over Barack could be offering anything—like Georgia or Poland—to Putin in exchange for the “29-year-old hacker.”
Funny because I guarantee you Obama has always been a Sandinista supporter.
I’ll bet that detention and search in Austria of the Bolivian President’s airplane were not part of this reaction. Not a chance....
He will love it here in Nicaragua, I do...no USA bs infringing on my rights...no ridiculous taxes, health care is reasonable...people are great...
The rest of you will soon see the USA is a crude imperialist country once they zero in on you...
