I think the main thing Putin wants is enough standing nations in the ME to keep them all worried about one another instead of all being under control of the MB and focusing on spreading jihad into countries they have borders with.

Given the way the US has helped the MB topple governments in the ME I thinke he'd be stupid not to support whichever side we're not helping. We don't have a border with any of the countries the MB would focus on next but Putin knows all "the Stans" are high on the MB priority list and Russia borders those countries.
