Gunmen shoot at weapons experts’ vehicle in Damascus: U.N
(Reuters) - Unidentified snipers shot at and damaged a vehicle being used by U.N. chemical weapons investigators in Damascus on Monday as they sought to reach the site of a suspected poison gas attack, a U.N. spokesman said.
“The first vehicle of the Chemical Weapons Investigation Team was deliberately shot at multiple times by unidentified snipers in the buffer zone area,” the spokesman said, adding the car was no longer serviceable and a replacement vehicle was being obtained.

Hysteria around chemical attack suits those who want military intervention in Syria - Lavrov
Published time: August 26, 2013 12:24
Following last weeks chemical attack, the West has engineered a media campaign to facilitate a military incursion, says Russias Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The diplomat also cast doubts on the veracity of US and European claims about the incident.
Official Washington, London and Paris say they have incontrovertible evidence that the Syrian government is behind the chemical attack in Damascus, but they have not yet presented this evidence. Yet, they keep saying that the red line has been crossed, Lavrov said during an emergency press conference in Moscow.
Now, we are hearing calls for a military campaign against Bashar Assad.

Thanks for the updates! I wonder if the inspectors ever made it to area?
BEIRUT U.N. inspectors successfully entered a Damascus suburb that was the site of a suspected chemical weapons attack last week, after initially turning back because sniper fire hit one of their vehicles, the United Nations said on Monday.
(ANSAmed) - BEIRUT, AUGUST 26 - Un inspectors met on Monday with Syrian doctors in charge of the field hospital of Muaddamiye, south of Damascus, one of the areas allegedly targeted by a chemical attack on August 21, Muhammad Shami, a nurse at the hospital, told pan Arab-Saudi television network Al Arabiya.
Shami said part of the UN inspectors’ team was able to access Muaddamiye and meet medical staff.
The international experts are charged with collecting data to verify allegations by witnesses and doctors that the regime used banned weapons against civilians in the Damascus region.
Muaddamiya is the area with the lowest number of casualties - about 70 - in the attack on August 21 while the areas which most suffered from the attack reporting hundreds of victims, according to sources, are east of Damascus, like Zamalka, Arbin and Ayn Tarma. (ANSAmed).

Germany could support military action if Syria chemical attacks confirmed
The German government said on Monday it would support an international military response against Syria if it is confirmed that government troops attacked opponents with chemical weapons. Chancellor Angela Merkels spokesman, Steffen Seibert said on Monday that if UN inspectors confirm the use of chemical weapons, it must be punished, and would not rule out the use of force. Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said that if the attack is confirmed Germany would be among those who consider consequences to be appropriate.
Thanks! Just woke up and appreciate the updates. Years ago, when the drum beat was just starting to sound about Iraq in the papers etc., my very first instinct was that it was a terrible idea. However, I got onboard to support the president and never looked back...defending it to the end. I think this time, I am going to stick with my first instinct...this is a very bad idea. Syrian pres may be bad, but not as bad as what comes after. And given that we now have a president that hates our country and troops (unlike Bush)...it is a very, very, very bad idea.
I concur ... bad, bad, bad.
The Hill had an article today which says that Obama is boxed in, given his earlier “red line” statement.
Meanwhile, Russia is issuing more warnings.
Curious timing of the Snowden release that the US was spying on the UN. Now we are hearing Snowden stayed at Russian consulate while in Hong Kong.
I saw all those articles about Obama being ‘boxed in’, blah, blah, blah. It really reminds me of the press behavior leading up to Iraq. They were all running around writing articles about the threat of Saddam with WMDS....egging Bush to war with breathless articles and TV specials about how terrible Saddam was, etc. Then Bush goes to war...and they immediately start screaming foul...the very same ones who wrote article after article about how in danger we were from Saddam and his WMDS. It was crazy....lol.
The US state media won’t be turning on Obama. Expect boastful analysis; decisive leader, and other BS.
Of course! They are already setting the table. ‘Obama is being pushed by Republican warhorses’.....Obama is boxed in...Obama is being pressured by Britain..Obama is being forced to enter war by Israel......Etc, etc, etc.
That way..when the whole thing goes to hell...Obama will have no responsibility for it whatsoever.

Syria charade: West bent on war, UN investigation meaningless
http://zeenews.india.com/news/world/mccain-urges-very-serious-us-action-on-syria_871826.html
Seoul: A “very serious” US response to an alleged chemical weapons attack by the Syrian government does not require UN corroboration that the incident took place, a senior Republican senator said on Monday.
Speaking as UN inspectors headed to the site near Damascus where the opposition says more than 1,300 people died last week, Senator John McCain said he was “totally convinced” President Bashar al-Assad’s regime was behind the “atrocity”.
McCain, who has long argued for military aid to the Syrian opposition to tip the balance in the conflict, said he was sceptical that the UN team would be able to complete a thorough probe.
“It’s hard for me to believe that Bashar al-Assad is going to allow the UN to investigate something he has done that will be harmful to him,” the former presidential nominee told reporters in the South Korean capital Seoul.
“But we don’t need UN corroboration,” McCain said, urging President Barack Obama to respond swiftly and effectively.
“If the US stands by and does not take very serious action — not just launching some cruise missiles — then again our credibility in the world is diminished even more... if there’s any left,” he said.
Obama had said a year ago that the use of chemical weapons by Assad’s forces was a “red line” that could trigger Western intervention.
McCain said the United States should neutralise the Syrian government’s air capability and establish a safe zone under its protection.
He also rejected arguments by some in the US administration that arming the Syrian rebels might result in weapons falling into the hands of Islamist groups.
“We can get the weapons to the right people. That is not a difficult task,” he said. McCain was in Seoul, together with Democratic Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, for a visit to discuss the human rights situation in North Korea.
Russias Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Official Washington, London and Paris say they have incontrovertible evidence that the Syrian government is behind the chemical attack in Damascus, but they have not yet presented this evidence."
Now we hear that Germany will support international action IF supplied proof that chem weapons were used.
Germany is only demanding proof that chem weapons were used, NOT proof of who used them.
Neither rebels nor Assad are even refuting the fact that chem weapons were used.
Even the press seems unconcerned about WHO used the chem weapons??? The story is all about THAT they were used.
Based on that evidence alone, countries are lining up to support removal of the chem weapons.
Is anyone asking exactly how that will be accomplished? --- as skillfully as a surgeon removes bullets from a body? just remove the offending material? and let the Syrian war carry on, minus the chem weapons?

Israeli intelligence ties Syrian gas attack to Assad
Daily Caller ^ | 08/25/2013 | Josh Peterson
Israeli intelligence can tie the recent gas attack against the Syrian rebels to Syrian President Bashar al-Assads regime, the German publication Focus reports.
U.S. Naval War College Professor John Schindler tweeted the story, adding that Israel shared the information with the U.S. and other allies.
