I have witnessed a deer run a hundred yards after being shot through the heart and lungs before collapsing.
Shot one running one time, he flipped, jumped up and ran about 70 yards, then crumpled.
As you have stated, this one was heart shot. Seems that lung shots drop
them quicker, but the heart must cause something to happen in their
system that they have that sudden burst of energy.
I've read police instructors saying a human can maintain consciousness and perform purposeful movement for up to 30 seconds after being shot through the heart. Some, though, will think "I've been shot" and drop right there, but that's more psychological than physical. Somebody high on drugs may not feel the pain and not even realize he's been shot, until the body's muscles and brain stop from oxygen deprivation.
This is one reason why cops are trained to just keep firing until the bad guy actually drops.
